Unforgettable film of strength, purpose & hope:A Beacon
Review created: 08/06/09

This excellent documentary follows the lives of three "Lost Boys" trek to a new and exceedingly different life in the United States after their heroing exodus across the deserts of Sudan, Ethiopia and finally settling in a refugee camp in Kenya. The horrors of ethnic cleansing in Sudan, then again in Ethiopia, some losing their families and some not knowing if their parents were dead or alive, walked 1,000 miles for over 10 years in search of safety. Now, grown young men, the "Lost Boys" are questioning the empty lifestyles of the Americans while bolstering their faith despite their horrific fight for survival. After seeing this film, I knew I had to have it! I share this DVD with friends and the story encourages me when I begin to fall into some foolish, shallow indulgence.
These "boys" have changed my life and blessed me with their overcoming strength, determination, stamina, and peaceful spirits. I know once you see it, you will want to have it in your collection too! What a marvellous eye-opener to our human spirits and our faith in God, Who surely has grown tired of humankind's self-demise, yet continues to replenish our souls with His love and mercy.

God Grew Tired of Us is a "must see" DVD
Review created: 05/07/09

This documentary - God Grew Tired of Us - is a gem! I am so glad I found out about it and wish that more people could see it.

The young men featured in it are inspiring. With all the sadness that they have endured, there is a great sense to go on and LIVE! There are actually really great moments of humor in this as you follow these young Africans through their introduction to life in America. I would recommend it for education in schools and for anyone with an interest in the Human Rights struggle in Africa and elsewhere.

  Everyone Should See
Review created: 09/04/08

I saw the movie God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of Lost Boys of Sudan and bought a copy and sent it to my brother. I also watched the movie with my daughter as I thought it gave a great perpective of living in another culture and then suddenly moving to The United States. I found it fascinating how others viewed us - the good and bad. Some people think if you move here it's an easy life, but these boys, now grown men, found life quite difficult and had to work many hours to pay for their homes and get an education. I almost got the feeling life was better starving, yet being with a tribe or group of people that care for you rather then have to go it alone. The only con was that there were scenes of men sitting around the apartment, and I would of liked to have seen them out more doing various activities. They did mention that groups of black men tended to provoke anxiety in Americans. This movie made me think about a lot of things and that's what a good movie should do. Therefore I highly suggest viewing it. It also got me interested in learning more about The Lost Boys.

God Grew Tired of Us:REALITY CHECK (Highly Recommended)
Review created: 07/05/08
by:

This documentary was phenomenal. It brought tears, smiles, heart-wrenching guilt, and most of all - HOPE to my family. I showed it at the end of the year to my High School juniors after finals and they overwhelmingly said that it was incredible, perception-changing, and enlightening regarding the world outside of the U.S. For generations of self-absorbed, self-indulgent Americans who take our quality of life for granted, it is a true Reality Check that we have it better than we know and that, unfortunately, we are oblivious to how difficult life on this planet can be outside of our life of comfort.

The video tracks several 'Lost Boys' through their journeys (from exodus from Sudan to refuge in Ethiopia to a long term refuge in Kenya to their eventual destination of the U.S.) and covers their struggles and victories for several years in Pittsburg and Syracuse. Their struggles with our culture (often eye-opening regarding our negative aspects) and their lucid observations astound throughout the movie. Their obligation and sense of responsibility to each other and helping their families is sobering and refreshing in the midst of an overwhelmingly apathetic period of American history.

Lastly, their complete honesty, warm hearts, forgiving attitudes, and genuine, overflowing love and sense of brotherhood will surprise most people and endear them to your heart (if you are like my students). Their sense of HOPE, despite their torturous past and tumultuous present inspired and motivated me to monitor more closely and get involved in world struggles and gave me a much broader perspective on my own worries and the things I stress about. The movie will undoubtedly have the same impact on most.

An excellent documentary. Sad and eye opening, but also humourous in its own way. The light moments are much needed. I donated money to International Rescue Committee.

Heartfelt story told very well, shocking truth!!!
Review created: 05/08/08

The movie takes you through a journey, showcasing the shocking treatment of Sudanes Southerners. The subsequent re-location of a select few provides for some humrous viewing at times as the "Lost Boys" adjust to life in the modern world. All in all a tragic story that leaves you with a positive energy in the end, and a sense of responsiblilty to make a difference in your life!!

  EVERYONE Must See this, PERIOD
Review created: 04/02/08

This documentary is not something to try and make you cry about images of flies, starvation, war and death. This film shines a bright light on the human soul and what any person can achieve if they so desire. The heights a person can reach when they have purpose and reason.

This film makes you think. Makes you say, "Ooh, Wow, that's grand scaled reality!" Full of emotion.

You will stand in the mirror when this if over!

This is the most moving story, narrated by Nicole Kidman, of the worst and the best of humankind! These beautiful children, overcame unimaginable obstacles in order to survive, and then succeed, with compassionate hearts! I loved this story, and it stays with me, deep in my heart!
