Album Notes Jesus Lizard: David Yow (vocals); Duane Denison (guitars); David Wm. Sims (bass); Mac McNeilly (drums). With Duane Denison's stinging scalpel guitar, David Yow's Texas-inflected rants, and a punishing rhythm section, the Jesus Lizard was an animal without precedent outside of Nick Cave's similarly disruptive Birthday Party. Their second album, GOAT, portrays a band growing comfortable with its power, featuring tightly wound songs that slam hard without resorting to hardcore histrionics. The production by Big Black's Steve Albini gives the rhythm section all the space it needs to wallop with a mallet of mutant punk-funk groove. On tracks like "Nub," Dennison's guitars cut through like a rusty chop-shop buzzsaw while Yow seethes with madman intensity.
Editorial Reviews Rated #56 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - ...Behind the graceful stumble of ever-changing, stripped down rhythms (made bombastic by [Steve] Albini's fingertips) and Duane Denison's crystalline guitar lines [is] the notion that you [don't] have to be lame musicians or go at breakneck speed to be punk... Alternative Press (07/01/1995)
...a work of obvious delight, it plumbs the American psyche for every sick joke it conceals, and sets them on fire...GOAT takes the listener on the most thrilling, breakneck carnival ride... Melody Maker (07/17/1993)
...Without a doubt, this LP is most representative of their amazing live show, and their best vinyl overall to date. Totally memorable and groove oriented riffage, and David Yow is in top form... Maximum Rock & Roll (04/01/1991)
