Probably the best Civil War movie ever made

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. It stars Matthew Broderick so it can't be any good. Didn't you watch Ferris Buehlers Day off? I did, and I liked that movie too. But anyway, how can you take Broderick in a serious role such as a Colonel for a Union regiment? I believe that Broderick did an outstanding job as the actor for Colonel Robert Shaw, even though at times he made it look awkward. I never lost the notion that he was a leader of men in an army.
The other cast members weren't bad either. Co-starring academy award winners Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington as soldiers in the african american regiment. Morgan Freeman gives a wonderful performance as a father-like figure to Broderick's Shaw. Denzel Washington's bad guy turned good role as private Trips should have won him an best acting award.
The thing about this movie which makes it so great is that the setting, the clothing, and music makes the audience feel apart of the time period. Makes them feel like they were smack dab in the middle of the war. Thats how I felt anyway. Its not about killing or honor, its about the man next to you. That is the major theme in any war movie and this one definitely has that theme throughout.
Even if you aren't a Civil War fanatic, if you're a fan of brotherhood and friendship, of compassion for your fellow man. This is the movie for you.
