Glitter doesn't sparkle nor shine

Rotten Tomatoes consensus: Glitter is a hodgepodge of movie cliches and bad acting that's sure to generate unintentional laughs. Unfortunately, the movie is not bad enough to be good.
That said, Glitter doesn't sparkle or shine, and while the written reviews are less than flattering; I found something a little endearing about this film. Maybe it's the undeveloped storyline or quite possibly the comedic way Padma Lakshmi vamps around and sings off key (we've come to know and love the Padma of Top Chef fame). If you're expecting a powerhouse performance from Mariah Carey, prepare to be disappointed, because Mariah cannot act. While there may be some truth to the semi-autobiographical nature of this film; unfortunately, there was no storyline development of Billie/Mariah's rags to riches tale. Mariah's vocal stylings are present (as are those of other artists appearing on the Glitter soundtrack). However, her singing voice does not a story make. It feels like bits and pieces of various stories have been thrown together making it disjointed and most of the storyline elements remain unresolved even in the end when her limousine pulls up to the farm house questions are left unanswered.
All in all, if you're expecting a great movie then don't buy it, because Glitter isn't it. However, if you want to be somewhat entertained, maybe laugh a little, blink back a tear or two, or root for the boy - then Glitter is at best a must see. If you're truly a Mariah Carey fan, then no matter how good or bad you might think this film is, you owe it to yourself to add it to your collection.
