Album Notes The Green River Boys includes: Glen Campbell (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel includes: Bobbie Gentry, Steve Wariner, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Producers include: Nik Venet, Al Delory, Kelly Gordon, Neely Plumb, Gary Klein. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Recorded between 1962 and 1989. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. An absolutely definitive anthology of Campbell's pop and country hits (ignoring his more recent work as a gospel singer), this two-CD best-of displays a consistency remarkable in such a long career. With a few exceptions, everything here sounds like it was recorded in a single marathon recording session. The Jimmy Webb songs are probably the most memorable; "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman," for example, combine the emotional directness of the best country music with a harmonic complexity worthy of Burt Bacharach. But there's much more to admire here, including a crazy (in a good way) instrumental version of "The William Tell Overture" (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, no less), a sensational version of the folky and venerable "Bonaparte's Retreat," two beautiful duet remakes of Everly Brothers hits with Bobby Gentry, the infectious R&B-tinged "Southern Nights," and the funny and perhaps still relevant "I Knew Jesus (Before He Was a Star)".
