Synopsis Published in 1957 and set sometime in the future, Ernst Juenger's unsettling dystopian novel is about a world dominated by Zapparoni, a businessman who manufactures frighteningly lifelike robots. Zapparoni hires Richard, a war hero and former cavalry officer (as was Juenger), to head his security staff, putting him--as part of his initiation--through an ordeal that drives Richard to the brink of madness. In this brilliant satire, which has become a classic, Juenger explores the ethics of technology in the years just before it became a driving force.

Industry Reviews "[A] taut, compact, masterful book which, though it must have once seemed highly fantastic and absurd when it first appeared in 1957, is never silly. It is discursive but does not outstay its welcome. It is also terrifying." Los Angeles Times Book Review (12/03/2000)
