Synopsis
Throughout his career, Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER) has expanded the scope and breadth of his vision, until calling him a crime writer fails to do justice to the complexity of the issues his novels embrace. Though THE GIVEN DAY's protagonist is a Boston cop, the novel--set in 1919 during the bloody Boston police riots--is an epic historical work that tackles issues of racism, baseball, class warfare, and the dreams and corruption of American democracy. Danny Coughlin, a policeman from a wealthy family, finds his values tested by a strike, an Irish girl, and his friendship with a black criminal on the run from the law. Selected as one of the 2008 Best Books of the Year by Publishers Weekly.
