Pleasantly Surprised Literary Chick Lit

I am not a big fan of chick lit. I may read one after I read something "heavier" as if to clean the palate. Yikes that sounds obnoxious! This book is marketed as one, of course when this was first published in 1999 the term was not widely used and this book became the one to make it popular. But it doesn ot read like regular chick lit. It is more literary, has more depth and is not trying to be Sex and the City - like tons of chick lit books try to be.
Girl's Guide reads like a memoir. You get different stages in the main character's development, both emotional and professional, in short story-like chapters. Each chapter stands alone and some have been published as short stories in periodicals.
Story is simple enough, girl trying to figure out love, relationships and what she wants to do with her life.
Very easy read and entertaining. I actually started reading it at 8 this morning and now it is 2PM and have been done for a while. Do not be turned off if it is in the chick lit aisle and if you like chick lit then don't be turned off if my review disparages your favorite genre. Recommended for chick lit fans and short story fans.
