The Ghoul

Boris Karloff plays professor Morlant, a modern day Egyptologist, who purchases a stolen ancient Egyptian jewel, "The Eternal Light." He believes possession of it will guide him to the ancient resting place. But when he dies, the jewel is stolen from him which triggers events that bring him back from the dead to seek revenge.
Produced in 1933, it follows the very successful horror pictures "Frankenstein" (1931) and "The Mummy" (1932). To be sure, this movie is not in the same class as the previous two, but that is not to say it does not have its own merits. Karloff is again quite good. And there is veteran actor Cedric Hardwicke as one of the main characters. Filmed of course in black and white, some of the night scenes, as often is the case in these early "talkies" movies, are a bit difficult to view clearly. However, the audio and video are quite good otherwise. The plot is not too complicated, but there is enough suspense to hold your interest.
If you enjoy the "Horror" movies produced in the 1930'a, you will likely appreciate this effort.
