Four old men in the small town of Milburn, upstate Newy York. The "Chowder Society", who meet regularly to exchange ghost stories. Its the cold days of late autumn and a years past since the death of the Chowder Society's fifth member. The story hints that the death was not of natural causes, and the reader can tell that there is some terrible secret they all hold together. As a blizzard cuts off the town, something starts killing animals. from here the novel unwinds brilliantly.
In Ghost Story, Straub's writing style is very good, and it's an original story. And what Straub always does well is atmosphere. The book is also quite scary.
I think this novel is almost straub's best fiction.
