Better than you Think

Steve Beck’s masterpiece, the second best film of the year, and one of the most beautiful expressions of a vision I have seen put on screen. It is the simple story of a salvage crew who, on a tip from a mysterious stranger, discover an abandoned ocean liner, the Antonia Graza. Predictably, soon start to go awry, but not in a predictable fashion. Rather, from the shocking and disturbing opening moments on, the film is a riveting ride. That’s it. While the characters are well-drawn, the acting is solid, etc… This is not a film which is excellent by ‘typical’ standards. It is simply the most fun I have ever had at a movie. It manipulates every emotion imaginable, from eroticism to horror to sadness to humor. It even has a moment of stunningly moving emotional power. If ever a film was the definition of the power of cinema to stir, this would be it.
