If you need to learn the basics of GIS (geographic Information Systems) then this is the book for you. The 'Getting To Know' series of GIS books are wonderful. they have step by step procedures and they also have explanations as to what and why you are doing things. Each assignment's data is on the CD included with the book, as well a limited trial of the program.
I highly recommend this book for the beginner or even the advanced GIS user.

My daughter used online booksellers to purchase several of the books she needed for her first year of college. She saved money doing that. One title, Arcview GIS, was elusive and expensive, a bad combination for the frugal freshman. I decided to help and was able to locate the title on eBay and won the bidding for it. Wonderful news, as the price I paid for it was considerably less than she would have had to pay at the college bookstore.
Then began the dance--she packed for college. Daily her books arrived, but not the Arcview GIS. The seller waited eight days to mail it, so it arrived AFTER she left for school. The low price paid for the book became somewhat less low because of the postage necessary to mail the book to her college. Nonetheless, using eBay for the purchase saved us about $40, and who can argue with that? Thanks, folks!
