Album Notes Producers include: Clark Kent, The Ummah, James M'Tume, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Cyril Neville, Kirk Franklin, Maurice White, Teddy Riley. Engineers include: Kenny Ortiz, The Ummah. A variety of soul, R&B and rap musicians interpret the themes of Spike Lee's powerful homage to 1995's Million Man March on Washington, D.C. The musical mix is as diverse as the characters' reasons for marching on Washington in Lee's film, and the compilation captures the spirit of atonement and affirmation that distinguished the event. There is a sense of hope and unity in songs like Guru's "Destiny Is Calling," which expresses anger at persistent racism but emphasizes strength and positive action: "Destiny is calling us to greatness/We are the force/They cannot penetrate this." Other standouts include Stevie Wonder's emotional version of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," and the Neville Brothers' "Over a Million Strong," a jubilant tribute to the march featuring the Nevilles' sweet, soulful harmonizing. The latter song remains especially true to the unifying message of GET ON THE BUS: "Brothers and sisters/Over a million strong/Praying the same prayer/Singing the same song." | See an error?
