  Overall very good informative book
Review created: 10/07/07

This is overall an excellent informative book on the breed, with some information in it hard to find elsewhere. For example, there's a great tutorial on how to handle and stack (pose) a German Shepherd Dog for the conformation show ring written by Jimmy Moses. Anybody who has been around the GSD conformation show ring at all, will know who Jimmy Moses is. For those who may not know, he's been the top GSD handler for a long time, handling such dogs as Ch. Covy-Tucker Hill's Manhattan ROM, the only German Shepherd Dog ever to win Best in Show at Westminster. He handled Select Ch. Altana's Mystique, who for awhile held the record of having the most Best In Shows of any dog of all breeds. More recently he handled AOE Select Ex. Ch. Kismet's Sight For Sore Eyes ROM, TC, HIC, OFA and too many other well known top conformation GSDs to list them all. He handled GVCh Lance of Fran-Jo as a teenager, and many many GSD greats since.
Winifred Strickland was a top trainer and competitor in AKC Obedience competitions, titling many dogs with high scores. Her training advice and information is excellent.
The one area of the book that is inaccurate however, is the information on colors and color genetics of the GSD. She borrows her information from an article written by a breeder in the 1950s, who didn't know the way the white recessive in the breed works. For those of you who may want accurate color information, I recommend this site. http://www.geocities.com/sahiela2
The data on the annual winners of National specialty competitions both in the USA and the winners of the German Siegershows is good, although the book was published in 1988, so the data isn't current. Photos and pedigrees of quite a few prominent conformation show winning dogs of the breed are given, and the book overall is well illustrated with photos, although all are black and white photos.
Overall, a comprehensive book on the breed thats well worth having!
