Director Silvio Narizzano's 1966 comedy was the vehicle that vitually launched British woman actor, Lynn Redgrave's, award winning career. In this film, her performance as the misfit, Georgy, was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar.
Set in a very loose London during the socially revolutionary 1960's, Lynn Regrave's Georgy is a rather naive young woman who is nearly embarassed but also intrigued as she's exposed to the lack of morals of her swinging roommate.
Georgy Parkin (Redgrave) is a chubby young woman whose parents work as servants in a London mansion that belongs to James Leamington (James Mason). Georgy shares a London flat with Meredith (Charlotte Rampling), a wild & shallow violinist who engages in numerous sexual relationships. Georgy acts as if she's Meredith's servant who keeps up their apartment. Georgy's most interested in Meredith's long triste with Jos (Alan Bates), who's a colorful character.
When her parents' boss, Mr. Leamington, admits to Georgy that he's planned for her to become his 'legal' mistress, Georgy's astonished, but refuses. Meanwhile, Meredith & Jos concieve for a 3rd time & have already had 2 abortions. This time's different since Jos convinces Meredith to get married & have their baby. Georgy decides to remain & be their housekeeper. But, as Meredith is giving birth, Jos seduces Georgy & they live in bliss, even for a while after Meredith gives them the baby she doesn't want.
After Jos becomes jealous of the attention Georgy pays to the baby, they both realize their relationship is doomed. Georgy fears that when Jos moves out the baby she adores will be taken away by authorities. It's then that the widowed Mr. Leamington offers to marry Georgy & adopt the baby. Georgy agrees, keeps the baby, looks forward to living a comfortable life & Mr. Leamington has his "Georgy Girl," after all.
Typical of the Redgraves, Lynn's mother, woman actor Rachel Kempson's (1910-2003, 49 year long wife of Sir Michael) in the film playing the role of Ellen~
