My purchase of The Gentling Box was because the author, Lisa Mannetti, received a Stoker Award for best first novel for her work. The book deserved the award.
The story is set in Romania in 1863/1864 and tells the tale of the curse a gypsy witch puts on her clan. The pace of the story is superb. It rarely slows until it nears the end. Mannetti's decriptions of the gruesome moments certainly get your attention. The subtle way she reveals the purpose of the gentling box got my mind running forward to find out how it would be used further in the story. Based upon the setting, this is not a happy story.
This is one case where you certainly can't judge a book by its cover. This is not a paranormal romance.
