Synopsis This biography of James Forten tells of his service in the American Revolution as well as his successful career as one of Philadelphia's foremost sailmakers and businessmen. Forten, an African American, was active in reform movements, including the antislavery cause, and was a leader in the black community and the founder of a family dynasty. He also wrote a book, LETTERS FROM A MAN OF COLOR, published in 1813.
