Could be called "transmission overhaul for dummies"
Review created: 09/06/09
by:

I was intimidated by the prospect of rebuilding my TH400 transmission, but after being quoted $1200-2200 for the job by local shops i decided i had no choice.

I have in the past rebuilt several engines and carburetors--often using Haynes manuals--so my mechanical expertise is probably above average. I am not a pro, however.

Put simply, this manual is idiot-proof. Photos detail nearly every bolt or gear that must be removed. I also had the Motorbooks manual on hand, but mostly used the Haynes book. My rebuild was a success (so far), and i credit be thoroughness of the book with making it stress-free. I spent $120 in parts and $10 for this book on ebay--i think my decision was the right one.

Just like Doing a transmission overhaul yourself
Review created: 07/07/08(updated 07/09/08)

1000 step after step photo overhaul the transmission.
never touch a transmission before, but taking the ASE A2 test this coming Dec 2008.
By going over the procedure,, just like doing the hand-on overhaul myself,, definetly a great help in passing the test

the following added 2 days later.
To make long story short, technical Diagrams are hard to grasp; gears, clutches, band are crowd, tightly packed and squeezed together; A snap-shot cut in any 2 dimensional transmission section is overwhelming for the brain to make sense. This book with thousand over sequence photos of dismantling and assembling comes to the rescue. mentally and actively just follow one particular model Over and over again, figures in TEXTBOOK can really supplement the text explanation now. Note again I study transmission books just to try to pass ASE A2 only , not to overhaul the system.
