      G.E. 900 MHz cordless phone
    Review created: 04/01/08

Going back to the lower frequency phone had me a bit skeptical at first; I had grown well accustomed to my 2.4 GHz cordless and remembered less-than-ideal performance from my 900MHz cordless from 1991. The older technology was rather weak, signal-wise and I found myself frequently pressing the channel button to get a stronger signal. But this unit was manufactured in 2002, pretty much the same time the 2.4 GHz phones were making their debut. I must say that in the time since I bought my first 900 MHz phone and this 2002 G.E. phone, much has improved. While I'm not a fan of General Electric as a company, I have to admit I've had a few products of theirs over the years that were virtually bullet-proof and continue to deliver dependable service. I see no reason to expect anything less with this phone than any other product they produce.
Why a 900 MHz phone as opposed to a higher frequency model? Some studies I've read suggest that having high frequency radiation in close proximity to human tissue interferes with normal biological functions. WHile I'm not sure I buy into all that's being reported as yet, the fact that I can make phone calls using a lower frequency device with pretty much the same performance as a higher frequency device (and the fact that I got a new unit for less than $20.00) was incentive enough for me to say, "Why not"? I've been using it for a little over a month and it has performed flawlessly with no interference whatsoever. The only thing I don't like about it is that the handset starts ringing with a chirp, presumably from the base unit receiving the call signal and beginning the transmit to the handset. It's a little quirk that I suppose I'll get used to over time. This is otherwise a really decent cordless phone with caller ID function, 10-number memory and answering machine.

This GE cordless phone is really straight forward and simple to use compared to it's more expensive and much more complex cousins. This phone offers excellent reception even outdoors and far from the base station. The large, back lit buttons are easy to read however, the additional characters on the caller ID (date and time, not the telephone number and caller) are bit small.

      GE 26998 Cordless Phone

I wanted a white cordless phone that would wall mount in the kitchen. It needed to have an answering machine and caller ID for the second call coming in on call waiting. I could not find what I wanted locally or on the net. I like the phone, but what I don't like is that the window and type are small and difficult to read the incoming number on caller ID. Also, if there is no name on the incoming call, such as "unidentified caller", it is in French.

I had a good cordless phone, just wanted what I think is a better one. I am 70 and do not see the best so it is a little hard for me to see to. After2 # it was a lot easer.I would buy another one next time I ever need one, but at my age this one should last one of my grandkids if they still have these around. Sheldon Moon
