I had the chance recently to go to a Jewelers Supply Store and browse the books for sale. Previously, online, I had seen many of the books that were being offered at the store and had been watching about 7 auctions to buy. It was therefore an eye opening experience to see the actual books! Honestly, this book "Gemstones of the World" wasn't even on my list of auctions to watch! Another gemstone book that I had thought was very good for recognizing gemstones was mostly a black and white book with only about 15-20 pages of pictures. So, after carefully comparing, I found that the Gemstones of the World Book by Walter Schumann to be the most informative book with plenty of pictures (1500 photos), information, locations where a gemstone is mined, packed with references including gem terminology definitions, crystal systems & structure, diagrams of gemstone cuts and even a map of the world with reference to which gem is mined in which country. It's a nice size book, well made, priced right and a handy reference that I certainly will use for years to come.

The book was formerly a library book, so it was very used. I did end up purchasing the new edition but I have not seen any new information in it, which was kind of disappointing. This is an excellent book, especially for beginners. I has many beautiful pictures of gemstones and detailed descriptions. My only complaint about this book was how used it was and that I had to pay more than I felt it was worth in the condition it was in. I had to tape some of the pages that had been torn.
However, the seller claims to be donating some of the proceeds to literacy, so I consider it worthwhile to pay the little extra if it is going to a good cause. I'd suggest anyone with an interest in gemstones to get this book, even if you just want to look at the beautiful pictures.
The seller provided excellent service. Shipped on time and good friendly communication. A good deal overall.

I've been a jeweler for three decades, doing mostly one-of-a-kind custom pieces. I have yet to find a better source for the type of details on specific stones that I dearly need for doing the work that I do. It's a god-send, (and a lifesaver) when I have to build a piece for a stone I've (sometimes) never heard of. All I need is in it... Hardness, toughness, and the most beautiful (and plentiful) pictures anyone could want or need in order to get an in-depth knowledge of every stone imaginable. I've been using it for over 20 years. I've checked out others... both bigger and much more expensive, but continue to believe it's the best there is, especially for the price. I love it.

What I love about the book is all the pictures and the background information about mining for the gems or jewels! And it does have pictures galore. The main thing I was displeased is I really don't think it is for the layperson with no background or knowledge about jewels and gems. And that is why I got it is for the lay information, because I had a lot of my grandmother's jewlery that I wanted to sell on ebay and did not want to make mistakes in my listings, but I still had to consult numerous times with my jewelry consultant. I am a novice in the jewelry field and was looking for a good guide to identifying stones. How do you tell a ruby from a garnet?
This book was recommended to me by an experienced dealer and she didn't steer me wrong. I am especially pleased with the layout of the book. The first section is general information on hardness, crystal structure, terminology, deposits of gems, and mining. Alphabetical listing of gemstones with a desription and pictures of each follow.
This is a well put together and quality book.

VERY GOOD REFERENCE BOOK, ESPECIALLY FOR BEGINNERS1 of 1 people found this review helpful.
Very good reference book about gems, semi-precious stones and just about every other type of rock you can imagine! It is set up partiularly well for beginners, and includes a wide variety of information regarding everything any beginner should know. Earlier versions contained erroneous material due to being out-dated, but this newest version has corrected any errors due to the timeliness of it's information. The colour pictures are excellent, and he has even included good colour pictures of very rare and hard to find stones. He has included world-wide information about every stone you can imagine, as well as pictures of how the stones are obtained.
An absolute must for every beginner's library, and should be found in any general reference library as well. Give it an 8 to 8.5 out of 10.

This is a great book that you will cherish. It has a wealth of knowledge and is great for the hobbyist or professional. I am looking to get my gemologist certification and this book has helped tremendously. Thanks for a great book

I have this great and best book on gems ever seen and read, and was buying another book for a friend. Unfortunately, seller listed an unavailable item. Refunded me through PayPal who charged me a fee, so I did not get full refund and there was no shipping involved as nothing to ship. Very unreliable seller as far as I'm concerned. Should be easy to monitor inventory if you have any type of computer in the 21st century. Very disappointed not to be able to get book. Did not leave neg. feedback so as not to damage their rating, felt review enough.

this book is my favorit book, they have alot of nice photo and I can find all the detail that I want very easy or what kind the stones I have by look on the detail and picture on book ,books small enough so I can bring with me everywhere I want.

I purchased this book because a friend of mine whom is opening her own jewelry store has a copy. I really love gems and am so interested in them and found this book a wonderful plethera of knowledge regarding gems, their composition, & origin. This will be a great reference book for years to come!
