Stil together after all these years Review created: 12/17/05(updated 12/18/05) 28 of 31 people found this review helpful.
I've had my Garmin Street Pilot Gps Receiver for about 3 years now. In fact I wrote an epinions review for it a year ago. Here is an excerpt: "Being relatively new to the area and seriously directionally challenged, this item was a lifesaver for me. It's like a map quest that actually works. Get trigger-happy and turn the corner too soon? NO problem. It recalculates your route and either tells you to turn around or just gets you back on track efficiently. It has a safety lock which requires you to set your destination while the car is not moving, but you can disable it if you often drive with someone else who can operate it while you drive (lets say I do) I can see where it will pay for itself, especially in my case, where I will no longer be late for appointments, causing me to lose sales, I will also save me in mileage and gas that can rack up quickly when driving in circles. I still love it very much and for the most part I would still agree that is was relatively easy to learn. I would also still say that is does a pretty good job of keeping you from getting lost." At this point, I have traveled up and down the East coast using my Garmin GPS system with little problems. (I did still manage to get lost in New Jersey and on St Simons Island though) I have noticed that it has trouble around most mountains... It loses track of where it is, momentarily. The only problem with it is the need to spend $100.00 for upgrades. I live in an area that is still being developed. So any house or building built in the last 3 years is not accessible without this upgrade. A new feature I recently discovered that I seemed to have missed until recently is the function that allows it to mark where you are so you can get back to that point. So my suggestion to read the instructions before using it so you won't have to miss out on key functions like I did. Ahermitt is an artist, decorator, and homeschooling mom. Hands down this unit is the best automotive GPS unit for the money... bottom line. The StreetPilot III is very simple to use, the verbal instructions the unit orates in the vehicle are very clear and precise. It is most effective with a power source connected; otherwise the 6 AA batteries drain VERY fast. It is a gem in the car! This Garmin StreetPilot III model is a few years old and may physically be a bit larger than the newest models but the price more than justifies the purchase. Example: Brand new StreetPilot unit = $857-$1599 (MSRP) This unit = $250 and up (approx eBay) I purchased my used unit on eBay and am reaping the benefits. I am new to GPS and figuring out this unit was a cake walk; I have yet to open the 74 page manual I downloaded from garmin.com. It was easier to just play with it for awhile. I only purchased the unit, portable vehicle mount, and 12v power/speaker cable in my winning auction; no other additional software or accessories were included. I did need to additionally purchase: DC/PC cable (power and data cable in one), USB card reader, and newer mapping software (if my unit came with the discs and unlock codes I could have used it but since this was not the case I did buy the latest version 8 of City Navigator). This unit uses a specific Garmin data card (not a common media like SD, Flash, MemoryStick, etc) that is removable; very helpful in dowloading maps as you do not need to have the unit linked to your PC, just the card. The 128mb card could hold just over an eighth of the US on it; insist on having the 128 mb card, it will save you time. This unit is VERY simple to use and has a VERY large color display that is easily readable. It is nearly impossible to get lost with this unit (and recent mapping software) at your side. I highly recommend this purchase... if you can find an auction with all of the standard accessories (cables, software, mounting, etc) you have struck GOLD. If not, that is ok, there are a ton of resources on eBay to reasonably purchase accessories you desire.
