The Garming Steetpilot colormap was the first Color unit Garmin sold. It did not have routing but is extreamly acurate and easy to use. I have had one since they fisrt came out (about 4 years) and it has worked flawslessly. If you dont need routing, this is a great unit.

This unit has great base maps of all interstate and most state highways. It can be downloaded with maps from CD using the optional memory cards.

Dont get the Streetpilot Colormap confused with the Streetpilot III. The III has voice and routing, it is a much newer unit.

  Garmin Streetpilot III

This is the 4th GPS unit I have owned and by far the best. The Streetpilot III by Garmin is very easy to operate and runs seamlessly to make any road trip more enjoyable. Garmin discontinued this item a couple years ago, but still backs it and provides software updates which makes it very affordable. Programming is easy, just load the maps and go. No reason to load routes or locations on your desktop anymore; it can all be done in the car, which gets you on your way sooner. There are several options which do need to be considered BEFORE your purchase of this unit. I would not opt for less than a 128MB data card. I live in Colorado and my 128MB card will hold my state and the surrounding states, but that's it. I'm sure the terrain has something to do with the limitation, but I wouldn't want anything less than that. Software is your next concern...Version 4 is just too outdated. You don't have to spend the money for the latest version, eight at this time, but I would settle for less that version 6 of the City Navigator software. Every unit should come with an AC adapter for your cigarette lighter in the car. This unit SHOULD also have voice included in the adapter. Some are being sold without the voice, but I wouldn't ant to keep having to look at the unit on a busy street when the voice will clearly tell me when to turn and keep my eyes on the road! Every model also needs to come with at least one cable for uploading data to your unit from the computer. A Serial cable with pins to plug into the back of the computer is most common. This is the only way to load waypoints or saved locations into the unit. There is, however, a better way to load the maps into the unit. A USB cable is the best way to go. What would take the serial cable between 45 minutes and an hour can be done in a matter of minutes with the USB connection. I highly recommend this cable and most quality units will include them. Mounting of the unit is a must. I prefer the bean bag mount offered by Garmin. A bracket goes around the back of the unit, then screws in for a more secure fit. The bottom then snaps into the bean bag base and you are ready to go. This is a secure, non-slip way to make your Streetpilot III portable and secure for your trip. The Garmin Streetpilot III has a large display, much bigger than the new, smaller, models, which allows bothe passengers in the front to view the display. It makes it nice when the passenger can program the unit while the driver can still see the display. The Garmin Streetpilot III is the only way I would go for a portable auto GPS unit.

The technology was advanced when the unit was released

Garmin produces really nice GPS units. Some people give this unit bad reviews failing to realize that the unit was first released in the late 1990's (I think). I have had this unit for almost 6 years now and love it. I know the limitations of the unit, and I know the purpose. Yes you still have to plan the route and enter it into this unit (or on your computer), and yes you are limited to the amount of storage you can have on the Garmin storage cards, but expecting the unit to function like the brand new GPS navigation units is unrealistic. That is like comparing a computer you buy to today to a Pentium 133 MHz.

I love this GPS unit. I can search the map when I am lost, and although it may take me a tad longer, I am willing to use some intelligence in order to still navigate the old fashioned way. With a little computer knowledge you can even improve the maps and the database.

I can still determine where a gas station is, and the software is still updatable.

The bottom line for me on this unit is for the price of getting this older unit on eBay, it sure beats letting Tom-Tom tell me where to go. In my eyes that takes the fun and adventure out of going to a destination. It is not fair to expect this GPS unit to function like a brand new model. If you understand the functions and the limitations this a great GPS unit.

  Garmin Street Pilot Colormap

I bought a used StreetPilot ColorMap about 3 years ago and it has worked extremely well. My only issue has been that the battery power function sometimes quits but that has not really been a problem as I only use it in the car. I suggest the optional memory card programming cord. It's easier than hooking up the unit. Memory card size will depend on your use. I found the 128 held enough for each of my vacation trips. The bean bag mount also works much better than I thought it would. I have never needed to hard mount the unit. The screen is easy to view in the day and the reverse colors in the night mode also work well. Perhaps my favorite part is how quickly it recalculates a route and gives you new directions if you get off course. The original MapSource software (4.1) worked well for years until there were just too many changes and I upgraded to the new Version 8. Part of me would like one of the new, compact GPS units but this one has been rock solid so I am will keep it for a while longer.

Great for a companion for the Kenwood D-700 radio. The only Color GPS for less than 500.00 that will hook up to the radio. I have an external antena and it locks on to the satilites super fast. Great street lavel maps and trip planning.

It already has paid for it's self by getting me through Detroit and alla of the detours, I just wish you could by a larger memory card than a 128MB.
Other than that, I am well pleased wwith this peice of gear.

I bought this second hand Garmin StreetPilot 3 GPS for the features of this model and it is as good as new. This model has auto routing and voice prompts, tracking, additional maps and routes can be downloaded from PC onto external memory etc. which makes it a great GPS for 4x4 adventurers but it is also handy for finding your way around cities. A new GPS with similar features such as the 276c will set you back in excess of $1000,00 in RSA but i got this for a mere fraction of the new price.

A great buy indeed!!

  Garmin StreetPilot III review

This unit would probably be rated good to excellent for its GPS abilities when it first came out but now It's main strength is its cost (compared to similar units). It's slow. You could be past your turn\exit if used in congested areas. It does not learn....even updates make the same mistakes (No way to tell it a better or desirable way). If you're familiar with the area you'll notice it will sometimes take you the long way around even with "shorter distance" option selected. Don't misunderstand, It will get you where you want to go; So in places where you're unfamiliar you'll thank your lucky stars you have it. The newer, more expense units allow desirable routes, and will give (audibly) the name of the upcoming street\road to make your turn.....nice! I can live the shortcomings of the StreetPilot III, I guess you get what you pay for.

Simple to use, sturdy, just the car GPS I was looking for.
I did not care for the new equipment with bells and whistles, I was looking for a simple but complete unit, I love the color screen, it's easy to see.

  Garmin is the Standard

Garmin is the standard by which GPS units are compared. The Street Pilot III is a very good unit at a good price. It is still supported with up to date software. I am happy with it's performance.
