Garmin Oregon 200 Car GPS Receiver

I did like the price of the Oregon 200. It works very well, and does as advertised. Easy to use and sat. accuisition is great.
DO note that it does not come with any topo maps pre-loaded. I was able to find what I needed on E-bay. Also this model is the base and does not have all the feature as the others. I did not mind that, and am happy.
I still saved money even after having to buy the maps. Be aware that you will not be able to download POI's from Google Earth at this time. Not a deal breaker though.
This unit is fairly easy to opperate and do what you need to do. I am using it for hunting and is wonderful.

I bought the Oregon 200 for a road trip through Peru. There are no official TomTom or Garmin GPS road maps for Peru, or many other less frequently travelled countries. But there are a lot of websites with free maps that work on Garmin's including the Orgeon. Once I had the right map set up it worked about as good as my TomTom does in the US, but without spoken directions (not a big deal for me), and screen is not quite as bright. Worked well on hikes too, but again, a lot depends on what map you use. Garmin provides great support for the Oregons and is releasing updated software almost monthly, further improving GPS performance and features.

Overall a very nice hiking/biking/car GPS. However if you want to use it just in the US or Europe and just in the car, you will have to buy one of the (expensive) Garmin maps for it. In that case a car specific model will be better and cheaper.

a very easy and versatile gps receiver......purchasing additional data cards and installation a breeze....since it is all menu driven the time required to be proficient on it is really short....only drawback of the unit is the screen readability in bright conditions.......

The compass quit working and cannot get any help or refund from the seller. Have sent it back and have not heard a word.
