The Garmin GPSMAP 295 GPS Receiver is an excellent handheld GPS for the money. The manufacturer has installed many user-friendly features that make the first time buyer or the professional happy. They manufacturer has excellent customer service and many additional add-ons to make this unit an extremely versatile GPS to be used in town, on trips, hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking, four wheeling or camping.
Suggestion:
1. One of the best ways to protect investment is to purchase a Protective Case for this GPS. You can find a top of the in line protective case that protects while allowing full viewing and access to all the features of your GPS unit. See a variety of cases at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER
2. Purchase cable accessories that allow you to upload or download maps and data from your GPS. Purchase a 12v auto charger so that you can always keep you unit charged before heading out cross-country. Purchase quality power and data cables at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER
3. Purchase an Amplified External GPS Antenna for the unit. The internal antenna is ok but will become intermittent in high buildings, cloudy skies and stormy weather. Purchase a quality, high gain remote antenna. See specification on 28dB and 55dB GPS antenna at:

This GPS rocks. I am a new pilot that is looking to extend the distances of my cross country flights and now i can no problem. The Gps is very accurate and shows every move in a decent screen refresh rate. The backlight is strong enough to allow clarity even with extreme sun glare. I like to use the yoke mount with the GPS for convience and one hand operation. It also has loads of information of every landmark on the GPS's map. If you click on an airport in brings up the name, identifier, elevation, runways and their information, close up map, communication frequencies, approach fixes, and so much more. If you are looking for a helping hand on long distance naviagations and routes, but aren't concerned about getting weather or terrain throuhg the gps, this is definetly for you.

I like its advanced features and color screen. It is a little more complicated than my older Garmin GPS V but that should be expected as it does a great deal more. I bought this particular model because it was absolutely the most bang for the buck. To get all of its features in a newer version would have cost 2 to 3 times more w/o a corresponding increase in capabilities or features.

This GPS is somewhat dated, the refessh rate is somewahat slow. Overall the unit is usefull as a backup or as a second GPS to display information not shown on the primary GPS screen. I had trouble with a loose connection in the circuit that used the batteries to power the unit, cost $250 for repair. I probably would hold out for a 396, I suspect with the inroduction of the 496 these 396's will come down in price.
