I got this one for my brother, though I about kept it for myself. It will work good for Mountain Bike trail mapping and riding. It even covers some of the features that my bike computer covers now such as speed and distance traveled. It is also waterproof which is good. And you can mount it to the bar of your bike or ATV. It does lack some of the nicer bells and whistles like color graphics but it seems to be very functional. I recommend it to anyone looking for a small versatile unit.

  Perfect for lightweight backpacking
Review created: 07/06/09

I bought this for lightweight backpacking since it is small, waterproof, lightweight, and easily worn like a watch. I recently tested it on a 4 day desert trip in Southern Utah and it was really great. I mostly want this just for location confirmation, and waypoint tracking alongside a paper map, so the lack of really useful maps built in is not a problem for me. It is highly customizable and you can create screens that show all the data that you want. I made up a screen that showed my location and elevation, plus the distance and direction to a waypoint of my choice. As long as I had a clear view of the sky it locked in within less than a minute with resolution less than 10m. I also love that it takes AAA batteries since it is key to have a backup. I used lithium batteries and they lasted a long time.
I only had one problem: The unit is connected to the wrist strap by two watchband type connectors. At some point in the trip, one of these came out and although the unit was still attached to my wrist, it was very floppy. This is easily fixed by buying a new part from any watch place, but I do wonder about the long term durability of this connection method.
Overall though, this unit is perfect for me. Low cost and lightweight, simple to operate with all the essential functions that I need.

  Foretrex 101

I purchased the Foretrex 101 for backbacking. It's very light and easy to use. The ability to have it on like a wristwatch makes it great.

I decided against the Foretrex 201 because on long hikes I felt it was easier to bring along additional batteries than a solar charger. Both for weight, and since backpacking solar chargers are very expensive and not reliable. I'd hate to suddenly have to have the GPS on and have a week of cloudy days and not have the juice.

The Foretrex 101 does have a shorter battery life than advertised and that is the reason for a Good rating instead of Excellent. I have been getting 10-11 hours instead of the advertised 15. Other than that, it is an excellent unit. The battery life may be better in the fall and winter when it's colder. That will have to be tested at that time.

If you want the ability to download your tracks and waypoints you'll need the cable and possibly the serial/usb adapter. It makes it easier to plan your routes and waypoints on the computer and then upload them to the Foretrex. Otherwise, you'll be using the buttons on the bottom to scroll through numbers and letters to name everything and that can take a long time.

If you are looking for a unit that can hold base maps and topos, this isn't it. But if you are a minimilist camper and want a very lightweight and compact GPS, this is the one.

Very small and light GPS reciver.
Works with AAA (alkeline or nimh rechargable).
Reception is good only out in the open (about 5m accuracy)
Great for off road trips or hiking.
Need to buy (or make) a cable to connect to PC.
Need Mapsource software to send/recieve data from PC.
Seems durable and firm.
I am happy with it :)
Ziv.

  Farmin Foretrex 101 GPS
Review created: 04/09/07

I use mine for horseback riding. We ride in alot of state parks with wooded trails and its easy to get lost and you have no idea how far from camp you are. This GPS easily tracks and displays your mileage, average rate of speed and has a bread crumb trail that you can follow back to your starting point. Very cool gadget for the price, buying one for a friend for his birthday!!!

  Surprisingly Good!
Review created: 03/06/07

I bought this as a cheap and ultraportable GPS unit that could take tracks and do basic mapping. It gets surprisingly good reception (normal 20ft) when walking, running and cycling city streets. The Garmin interface is slick and easy, and I'm quite used to it due to the other Garmin GPS units I've owned in the past. I bought the cable to transfer tracks over, and have had luck using LoadMyTracks for Mac OS X with the Keyspan usb-serial adapter.

You can't beat the form factor or the price on this. The next GPS I will buy will be one of these that does color, has a sirfstar III and can load maps. Might be a while ;)
