Garden State (2004, DVD)

Movie Description
Andrew "Large" Largeman (Zach Braff of TV's SCRUBS) is returning home to New Jersey for the first time in nine years to attend his mother's funeral. A struggling actor in Los Angeles, he's been living under clouds of medication prescribed by his psychiatrist father (Ian Holm). After drifting through the funeral with the same emotional numbness he's felt for years, he reconnects with old friends Mark (Peter Sarsgaard), a gravedigger, and Albert (Denis O'Hare), a millionaire who invented noiseless Velcro. In a doctor's office, he meets ebullient Sam (Natalie Portman), an epileptic whose lust for life inspires Andrew to feel things that his medication long denied him. Over four days, he develops feelings for Sam he didn't know he was capable of, and faces up to the resentment his father holds toward him about an accident that happened long ago.

Writer, director, and star Zach Braff makes his debut feature with this off-kilter, unusually smart, self-assured coming-of-age film. GARDEN STATE has a knack for sharp-edged humor, character quirks, and finding lovely imagery within the mundanity of the suburbs. These things combined are abundant evidence to indicate that Braff's filmmaking future is filled with limitless promise.

Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas (07/28/2004)

"GARDEN STATE is an introspective, melancholy piece of slacker existentialism which rips apart occasionally to reveal belly laughs and tiny miracles."

      Garden State is Surprisingly Great

I bought the DVD off of eBay after hearing outstanding reviews from numerous friends. And I'm here to do the same - refer you to Garden State because its a fantastic film that is witty, sarcastic, well acted, well written and unique. Zach Braff is the lead role, playing Andrew Largeman - a twenty-something looking to understand himself and awaken his inner soul... the remedy? The beautiful and free spirited Sam (played wonderfully by Natalie Portman).

I've never met anyone who didn't rave about this film - So check out Garden State. You'll enjoy.

Ok. I'd like to give you a review about this movie. But to be honest. I've been trying to block it out of my mind ever since. The earlier review on this said they haven't met anyone who didn't rave about this movie.

Hi- My name is Kathy and I didn't like the movie. Sorry. If your idea of a good flick is to watch some loser guy with no aspirations in life other than to get high and hang out with girls is amusing. maybe this is for you.

This guy is so strung out on prespriction drugs, that he has no clue of reality. Personally I had a hard time staying awake. I didn't find it interesting or amusing at the very least.

My FIRST THUMBS ON A REVIEW....

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

      Unexpectedly Excellent
    Review created: 10/08/08

Perfectly chosen songs portray a journey through self-awareness, love, life and the everyday. Filled with serenity, longing, aching desire, adventure, high spirits, and calm all on the level of reality. It's a sweet melodic carpet ride. And Zach Braff wastes his time on sitcoms. He should continue to show his true talents by making more movies. Beautifully acted, beautifully directed, perfectly cast, superb soundtrack. Zach, you slowly embraced me until I could see how simplicity and honesty makes life so beautiful.

If you haven't seen this movie, go see it now. Don't expect car crashes or gunplay, but a slow ride into life that you hope never ends.
