GPX KCL8806DT 7 in. Portable TV

The GPX 7inch screen under-counter tv/radio is typical in styling with big buttons that are sometimes hard to read. The installation instructions recommend installing the unit flush with the front of your cabinet. However, our cabinets (standard sized) are about 4" shy of being deep enough to accomodate the unit. That means after installation, the KCL8806DT sticks out about 4" beyond the cabinet face.

All of this is not enough to make me want to take the unit back. However, my main complaint is the horrible cable tuning. I don't know what the unit is doing when it tries to run its auto channel setup, but when it's finished my cable channels are scattered everywhere and most of them are filled with snow. Manual tuning doesn't appear to fix the problem and auto-tuning seems to make things worse. Add to that the complete lack of troubleshooting tips in the instruction "booklet", and you have a very poor product representation.

If the stupid thing would just lock in on the cable channels, this would be an adequate, low-cost solution for those who want a tv in the kitchen without taking up counter space. I am going to attempt to lock in the channels one more time. If I'm not successful, I'll be taking the unit back for a refund and purchasing a known brand. It will certainly cost more, but you *get what you pay for*. In this case, $100 may very well equal useless.

*** Update *** We took the unit back for a refund, and upon further reflection, changed our initial rating of this product from average to poor. No amount of tuning made the channels come in clearly on this tv. It is junk. Stay away from the GPX brand.

I purchased the KCL8806DT (KCL8806DTSIL) from Sears after Thanksgiving, and am currently looking for a second one just in case this one dies as I don't want to drill holes in my cabinets again.

First of all, all the other comments are correct regarding the radio/weather band reception (actually lack of it). As I bought it for the TV, I was not as concerned about the radio/weather band reception though you would think it should work. After all, it is a feature listed on the packaging.

Second, don't expect too much from the clock either. After two weeks of use, I found that the clock was off by two minutes. Kind of annoying since it is right next to the coffee pot that has a clock that has kept perfect time for close to 10 years. Yes, 10 years...I love my coffee, and this Capresso unit from Williams and Sonoma was expensive. Get what you pay for???

Third, the warranty on this item is only 90 days. Don't know what their policy is if you purchase on ebay, but that is what it is if you have a traditional store receipt. Also worth noting, GPX customer service told me that the mounting holes for the three different models (clock radio, clock radio w/TV, and clock radio with TV/DVD) have different locations for mounting screws. Something to consider if you ever decided you want to replace/upgrade the unit, and don't want to drill new holes.

Last, but most importantly, the TV display has deteriorated over the last two weeks...not as clear as when it was new. The tuner has been fine. The autoscan locked in on all the stations the first time (Cox cable), and the remote works fine.

With that said, I returned my first unit to Sears for an exchange. The second unit's tv is working fine so far (3 days), but I have the same problems with the radio/weather band tuner. Time will tell if this one lasts any longer.

Actually, this is for the similar GPX KCLD8886DT TV/DVD, but I didn't see that product listed, so I'm putting it here. I think alot should apply to this TV, as well, since they look to be almost the same (except for the DVD player). Anyway...

Can I give this less than a one bar rating? Humm, if I could, I would.

Without knowing much about it, I bought this to replace a similar Magnavox TV/DVD that stopped working (sad day that was...). Knowing what I know now (poor picture quality!!!; poor sound quality; non-existent FM reception), I would never have purchased it!

The worst feature of this TV is the TV, and that's why I bought it. The picture is not sharp, and you cannot adjust the setting to improve the sharpness. The picture lacks brightness, but when you turn up the brightness, the colors bleach out--there's no middle ground. The color fidelity is very poor. The viewing angle is quite narrow.

The sound quality it not great, but forgivable, given it's just a TV... The only thing is there is an occasional humm that comes in and out, depending on what the TV is playing. Also, it doesn't remember the volume setting after it's been turned off, so when you turn it back on, the volume reverts to a preset level (which is quite loud).

The FM reception is... interesting. I get one channel (98.7), which comes in loud and clear, but I get no other channels. I can't figure that one out...

It has an aux-in for an iPod or whatever which works okay if you can live with the sound quality.

I will say this, though, I haven't had any problems with the DVD player... I guess that's something...

Having an under-cabinet tv is really nice, but sometimes the screen is difficult to see....if one person can see the picture, the other person has a shadow...I really wish I had spent more $$ to get the 10". Also, after moving, the dvd/cd player is acting up. It will play for 1-5 minutes, then shut down...the problem is, until it decides it wants to work again, I can't get my cd/dvd out! My suggestion would be to spent a little more to get better quality. As other's have said, in the two homes I have lived it, it stuck out 3-4 inches past the cabinet...but the stick out area makes a nice place to hold the remote!!

I have NOT had any of the problems the other reviews have had. All my channels programmed the first time, Picture is great ( wife uses it everyday ), and the mounting instructions/template were great. Now for the bad ............. the radio quit working after 4 days. It just produces a loud squeal on any radio station. I didn't buy it for the radio so no big deal here. I will try to return it at a local store but we'll see as I bought it here on E-Bay.

Screen went white after only two months of using it!

Stay away from this product.

Price might be ot really high but you get what you pay for, a useless product.

PROS: Excellent features and performance for the price. Good size screen, easy to use and configure.
Cons: Poor radio antenna reception.
I have mine since dec 2006, my wife use it daily, as of now so far so good!!.

Piece of junk. When the screen decides to come on, it displays a nice picture. But, for sure there are problems with the design. The screen kept going blank (white screen). Let it cool for a couple of days, and then it MAY decide to come on. After many tries. I sent it to where it belongs (the garbage can)

I am still tryingto get this product to work properly. It won't read the lower channels. The seller was quick to deliver the product in very good condition.

I like the under cabinet tv, but, I am having problems with the video...everything works but the video on the tv...The sound works, but the video on the tv does not...I am having trouble contacting the people that sold it to me. I have only had it for a month...paid 68.00 for it with s/h and now the company cannot be contacted....just thought I would everyone know....I am getting a new one from GPX for 75.00...Thanks GPX..

Excellent tv for the price. The screen is rather small and must be on strech to fill up the display. We needed to put it under a corner cabinet so it did not stick out past the cabinet.

The product is poor quality and has all the troubles everyone has reported but the price was right at Home Depot ($70.00) when I bought it (they don't carry this item anymore - they have a better model for $350.00) and they had five in stock and over the course of a week I kept bringing mine back until I found one that did work.

It worked a year and a half and has now quit and I am looking for another even though they did have problems. When I found one that worked it worked good - tv screen was always aharp & clear and sound was okay.

It won't tune in cable channels worth a flip but it will tune in 2-13 off the air without any trouble or on ch3 off your cable box.

I'm wouldn't consider spending $150. on a new one but $70. for a year and a half is okay. Its a cheap Chinese product and you shouldn't expect a whole lot out of it.

This thing is a peice of junk. I am on my THIRD one. All screens went blank in a very short period of time. STAY AWAY! Good news, the THIRD one did tune in the stations correctly. After 3 weeks the THIRD one has the screen starting to DIE. STAY AWAY all have faulty T.V. circuits.

We bought this from Sears, and the tv flat out doesn't work. We get a picture for about 10 minutes (a very poor, dark picture), then it goes out completely. We have spent the last four hours working on adjustments and nothing helps. After reading the other reviews, we are taking ours back and getting a different brand. This may be a good lesson in "you get what you pay for."

After 3 hours of trying to tune in the channels, I still don't have all of them working. I was running from the living room to the kitchen trying to match what channel I had tuned to. Even after auto scannning several times, they didn't match and the manual tune doesn't help when the channels are all jumbled. Don't buy this unless of course you only want 12 channels! I've also tried the remote to go directly to a channel and it will only work up and down. So if I want channel 21, it will go to channel 2 and then 1. The only way I can get to channel 21 there is to push the up arrow 21 times!! If I could give this a negative rating, I would. There isn't much to be happy about right now, except that I didn't have to pay anything for it--I received this as a gift.

The listing said TV/DVD/CD/MP3. What it did not day was that it just a TV ( a very poor one) and radio (more like a joke). The rest was just compatible, meaning I could plug it in to the back. No CD, no DVD, and the MP3 plug in was clear in the back - not very easy to access. I already have a CD/AM/FM under the cabinet; I just wanted to watch the news while I made breakfast or dinner as an option in addition to listening to music. Maybe someday I will find something that really does both and well.

I mark this as average b/c it is average for a TV of it's size. The quality of the workmanship is pretty average too. However, for a small TV it does a great job. I got it for my kitchen and it has a really nice picture for the size. I also like the radio that it has. Some of the controls are a little hard to use or to even figure out but overall it is well worth what I paid for it.

TV works great. I Set it up in the kitchen. It has great sound and reception. Whether my wife is cooking or cleaning the kitchen she doesn't miss her favorite shows.

It would seem that although the ad mentioned it would receive over 100 channels, somewhere in fine print it said that mostly the screen was plain blue, with no picture most of the time. It was not an operative unit, and to list it as receiving so many channels was misleading. Watch out for this dealer, would be my advice.

I needed a under counter TV to replace a previously purchased TV of similar size and features. The quality of this TV does not seem as good as previously purchased unit.

did not work for more that 1 hour. Seller not to blame. After reading more reviews I find this is a common problem with item.

All (4) under the counter TV's did not work. The seller is a crook and took my money and I returned all 4 TV's and he still would not return my money. Paypal did not help me or ebay either.

I wanted a small tv to watch in the kitchen while getting ready for work in the mornings. This was just the right size, and the price was great. Love it.
