As a young woman in the 70's I had delusions about becoming a Broadway musical star. This was my workbook. I learned EVERY song in this movie by heart. Loved it, still do. Just wish they had made her character a little more realistic to the real Fanny Brice. Oh well, realism. Who needs it?

It is a funny world. It is based on a true story. It warns you against the vice of gambling. It shows you what it takes to succeed.

One Streisand is all You Need
Review created: 04/01/08
by:

Whether it was the Broadway Show stopper that made Mme. Streisand or the movie that continued to wow audiences and gain enthusiasts throughout the years, Streisand never needed a male co-star to make her look or sound better than she ever did. Listen, ya gotta have a voice, a million toots, sit around for them toots (or something like that).... it would probably take a BUY IT NOW with a BEST OFFER to buy Omar Sharif or Sydney Chaplin without Streisand leading the the gang. Then again, maybe that's why Streisand gave up theater and the movies...she needs nor wants to co-star with anyone.
However back to the basics here...Streisand shines in the movie version of this incredible show, although the movie was stripped of some great songs or (oh ok, a song) from the show. The fact is that you simply cannot take your eyes and ears off of Mrs. Brolin. And the fact is that you simply can understand why the co-starring men were given little but a smidge of a solo. Unfortunately, you don't have access to a DVD of the Broadway show to compare, but trust me, both men danced and sang like they had matzoh balls stuck in their abdomens. But then there's "our Funny Girl,'' our Rose of Washigton Square. Be one of the lucky ones to get this DVD NEW on HALF.COM, you'll thank me forever. BTW, if you do, send a copy of this review to Mrs. Brolin and let her know she's always that Brooklyn Babs to me!

A Musical Classic & the Birth of a Major Star
Review created: 01/20/08(updated 01/20/08)

What do people like about Barbra Streisand? In this role, which birthed her to movies, we see her crafting a range of emotions and acting ability as well as all her musical talents. Playing Fanny Brice, Barbra plays the shy side, the unconfident side, the seemingly ugly side to a tee. Then as the character is brought out of her emotional shell by Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif)and Florenz Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon), we see her mature to become a brilliant star, happy and completely loyal, loving wife and mother with all the heartaches that living brings. This movie demonstrates well that fame and fortune do not make people happy.

We become part of this journey because Barbra invites us in to this emotional ride at the beginning of the movie when she is about to make a big decision. The movie itself is told as her flashback before the decision. Usually, musicals are known for stars bursting into song without a moment's notice and are boring--but not this one! We welcome Barbra's "I'd Rather Be Blue", "Second Hand Rose", "People", "Don't Rain on My Parade", "Funny Girl", "My Man", and more. Lavishly photographed and directed by the mastermind director of the 1940-1960 decades, William Wyler, this movie is truly a winner. And Barbra tied for the Best Actress Oscar with Katharine Hepburn--what a finish!

The movie was full of controversy and irony as it was being made. The starring of Barbra (a Jew) and Sharif (an Egyptian) was not welcome in the Middle East. But more than just making the movie, the two were intimately involved for a while. Further, Ray Stark, the producer, was the real husband of Fanny & Arnstein's daughter, Frances.

This is a true movie classic.

The DVD also has two special features: (1) shows the making of the train station scene where "Don't Rain on My Parade" was filmed and the special role of the caretaker of the depot. (2) is a cavalcade of Barbra photos and tells of her beginnings in the theatre.
