A Musical Classic & the Birth of a Major Star
Review created: 01/20/08(updated 01/20/08)

What do people like about Barbra Streisand? In this role, which birthed her to movies, we see her crafting a range of emotions and acting ability as well as all her musical talents. Playing Fanny Brice, Barbra plays the shy side, the unconfident side, the seemingly ugly side to a tee. Then as the character is brought out of her emotional shell by Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif)and Florenz Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon), we see her mature to become a brilliant star, happy and completely loyal, loving wife and mother with all the heartaches that living brings. This movie demonstrates well that fame and fortune do not make people happy.
We become part of this journey because Barbra invites us in to this emotional ride at the beginning of the movie when she is about to make a big decision. The movie itself is told as her flashback before the decision. Usually, musicals are known for stars bursting into song without a moment's notice and are boring--but not this one! We welcome Barbra's "I'd Rather Be Blue", "Second Hand Rose", "People", "Don't Rain on My Parade", "Funny Girl", "My Man", and more. Lavishly photographed and directed by the mastermind director of the 1940-1960 decades, William Wyler, this movie is truly a winner. And Barbra tied for the Best Actress Oscar with Katharine Hepburn--what a finish!
The movie was full of controversy and irony as it was being made. The starring of Barbra (a Jew) and Sharif (an Egyptian) was not welcome in the Middle East. But more than just making the movie, the two were intimately involved for a while. Further, Ray Stark, the producer, was the real husband of Fanny & Arnstein's daughter, Frances.
This is a true movie classic.
The DVD also has two special features: (1) shows the making of the train station scene where "Don't Rain on My Parade" was filmed and the special role of the caretaker of the depot. (2) is a cavalcade of Barbra photos and tells of her beginnings in the theatre.
