Album Notes
Art Ensemble Of Chicago/Don Pullen: Lester Bowie (trumpet); Malachi Favors Moghostut (bass guitar); Famoudou Don Moye, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell (percussion).
Additional personnel: Don Pullen (piano).
Recorded live at the Jazz Festival in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1991, FUNDAMENTAL DESTINY features the original lineup of the Art Ensemble of Chicago joined by the late pianist Don Pullen. Four extended, adventurous compositions showcase the Ensemble's classic balance between rigorous technical expertise and loose, mercurial improvisation. While the opener, "People in Sorrow," builds and drifts over percolating percussion, tunes like the title track favor greater structure (and allow Pullen's piano playing to shine). Overall, this is an excellent set from a seminal avant-jazz group.
