Fun with Dick and Jane (DVD, 2006)

After all the big blockbuster films which have come out recently, I was relieved to finally go into a movie with no expectations. Fortunately, my mother, sister and I all found Fun with Dick and Jane delightfully funny and creative. As the opening credits roll, some short phrases flash across the screen… “Meet Dick”, “See Dick Run,” and the like to tie the film in with the simple “Dick, Jane, and Spot” stories used to teach children to read. In this story, Dick (Jim Carrey) and Jane (Tea Leoni) live in stereotypical suburbia. Dick gets a raise and promotion at work, and Jane quits her job. Unfortunately, all this occurs only hours before Dick’s company, Globodyne, goes up in flames because of corruption. After humorous attempts to find work, Jane and Dick decide to turn to a life of crime in order to keep their house and possessions.
What I Liked
I’m very pleased with the Carey/Leoni pairing here. Jim Carrey has honestly driven me crazy in some of his past works, but I think his acting has matured in the past couple of years. He’s very funny here but fortunately this film does not turn into “The Jim Carrey Show.” I was very impressed with Leoni as Jane. I’m pretty sure I’ve not ever found her particularly funny before, but in this film I thought she was just as funny as Jim. I also really enjoyed Gloria Garayua as the couple’s nanny, who allows the struggling Dick and Jane to pay her with appliances at one point.

This film made my family laugh out loud at least ten times. I’m pleased to say that the funny parts are NOT all in the trailer for once, because the actual film is much more amusing than I expected. Lots of laughs come from Dick and Jane’s bumbling attempts to become criminals. Carrey gets to do some very funny physical comedy, which is one of his strongest suits. I particularly loved a scene where he is attempting to hold up a gas station and gets his water gun stuck in his sweater pocket. The couple’s various costumes are also hilarious. At one point Jim holds up a car dealership dressed as Cher.

What I Didn’t Like
I don’t have much to complain about here. The film loses a bit of momentum about three quarters of the way in, when the couple is planning a particularly complex robbery. At this point I felt echos of “Ocean’s Eleven” as the plot is dramatically described. This is the only time I looked at my watch. Fortunately, Dick and Jane get the flow back pretty quickly and the last half hour is pretty hilarious.

Overall…
Fun with Dick and Jane is…fun! I think Carey and Leoni really hit a stride and worked well together, and the result is a very funny film. With all the big blockbusters released for this holiday season, this film holds its own and is one of my favorite films of the year.

Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni star as a wealthy married couple, with Carrey working at an "Enron" like company that goes bankrupt. As a last resort Carry and Leoni resort to crime to maintain their lifestyle. Supposed comedy ensues.
Not a bad movie, but not a great one either. I had a few laughs. This movies lands right in the "it was alright" category.

Fun with Dick and Jane

Nothing special but it's pretty funny the first time and even the second/third time you watch it. That being said it does have several scenes that really get on your nerves in a hurry.

Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni are a great on screen couple and Alec Baldwin is his typical 'evil' Self.

All in all Fun with Dick and Jane isn't perfect, but it delivers consistent laughs for at least one viewing.

Rent or Buy?: Definitely not a must buy. Some people really loved it, but most will get by with a simple rental.

Although I'm not typically a fan of Carey's physical shtick, I laughed harder at this film than any I can remember seeing recently.

Fun With Dick and Jane,in many ways whats wrong with our society today.We watch in disbelief as more and more CEOs are hauled up to jail and now these unscrupulous people leave their once valued employee to fend themselves,as best they can.

I really wanted to give this a 2, but that seemed just a tad low. This is a just below average comedy with some good talent that is, for the most part, wasted. There are a few scenes where Carrey and Tea Leone get to show off their comedy skills, but over all it's a fairly flat, eh, comedy. A few good pot-shots at corporate America and some minor laughs, but not nothing side-splitting. It's on the tame side, so it should be ok for kids.

As long as you don't expect too much, there are worse ways to pass a few hours. But, it could have, and should have been better.

I expected to laugh and enjoy Fun With Dick and Jane and although I laughed, I was actually quite bored throughout the movie. The previews basically show all the funny parts and the rest of the film tries to take on a serious tone and "teach us a lesson." Jim Carrey is a great actor and has his good moments in the movie, but the whole storyline was rather dry and easy to pick up. There were no surprises (because the previews already showed the only surprises) and I was not left with a feeling that I want to watch the movie again.

Rent from Blockbuster but Do Not Purchase!

The first one was better but they did a pretty good job on this one. Jim Carey (always funny) was great and Tea Leone is adorable and funny. Its one of those movies that just fun to watch.

The only thing you need to know is that this movie does nothing to display Jim Carey's comedic genius. This movie tries to make light of white collar crime by putting a comedic spin to it. Well it spins it in a non-comedic way. It has its moments, but it is definitely not "Wedding Crashers" funny. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Don't get me wrong cause i liked this movie and laughed my but off. But, I thought that this could have been better if the acting was better and if the director was better.

Jim Carrey movies are sometimes hard to understand. You have to hope you get a good one! At times he has a dark sense of humor, but there is none of that in this movie. They go from having EVERYTHING to NOTHING! Almost like a rags
to riches, but it is the other way around. There are some funny moments, and it has a good ending.

This is one of Jim Carrey's funniest movies I have ever seen! This movie is definately worth seeing.

I was very impressed with this movie. It was so funny. Dick(played by Jim Carrey)gets a big promotion, but it is just to make him to blame for the company's corruption. Before finding this out he incourage his wife Jane(played by Tea Leoni) to quit her job. All there money was tied up in stock with Dick's company, so they are really broke. This is only beginning of the bad luck that has found them. The stress pushes them over the edge. This movie will keep you laughing from beginning to end.

this was an awful e-bay experience, the movie was pirated, didn't even play in my dvd player, the seller was very dishonest, the only thing he offered was a refund. sellers like this make e-bay seem like a scam, i haven't bought anything since i recieved this movie...

i am a big jim carrey fan but it wasnt his best work . the movie wasnt funny in my oppinion it was kind of boring

This is a great family movie. My three year old enjoyed it. The whole story line about Dick and Jane being so high up in the food chain and then having to fall so far down through no real fault of their own was so believable. The way that Dick was used as a scapegoat and the way Dick felt like he had to do something drastic to get what was rightfully his,was so true to life. I really liked the way Jane trusted and believed in her husband,it was like the way all little girls use to imagine marriage was suppose to be like. Dick and Jane is such a warm family movie with alot of humor. Alec Baldwin played a real @#$%&*%! I know the whole bank drama was a little far fetched, but the movie needed to give Dick and Jane some satisfaction for all their suffering.

This movie was funny. I am not a huge Jim Carey fan, but there was something about him in this movie. I watched it w/ my 12 year old niece, nothing too bad in it for her to see.

The Best Movie JIM has ever DONE. It keeps you watching and entertained for the entire movie. You cant ask for anything else.

I thought this movie was better than liar liar and Bruce Almighty! A great story and enough to keep you laughing for days!

This was not one of Jim Carey's better works. I am not a Jim Carey fan, but he is usually very funny. A few laughs does not make a good film. I personally think that the producers of this film relied too heavily on the likeablilty of Tea Leoni and the marketbility of Jim Carey to carry this film, especially the ending. I find it flat and without any real substance. It's almost as if they ran out of money at the end and tried to wrap up all the loose end with a nice little fairy tale ending.

I thought that this movie was so funny. Jim Carry has got to be one of the funniest people in Hollywood. This is a must see for anyone who likes to laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again, jim has created another hit with his acting. Always the funny man, his comedy is a little different in this one. He does not use his "faces" as much in this one, but the actual story line is where the comedy lies. His co-actor was not overshadowed by his acting in this movie, but was with him stroke for stroke. Cute story line with a neat ending. A delightful fun movie.
