Fullmetal Alchemist

I believe that 90% of all anime is crap. This series belongs to the rare 10% that is actually fantastic; so much so, that this is one of only a dozen DVDs I have and the ONLY anime that I own. I am very selective about what DVDs I buy. Fullmetal Alchemist is well-plotted with a large cast of memorable characters and a wonderful story arc that has many surprises revealed at an excellent pace. The world, though possessing a lot of the elements of fantasy, is not far-fetched because it revolves around a set of defining principles established early in the story. The rules of this world are not broken or added upon, but remain consistent throughout the series.(One of my pet peeves in anime is when a character surpasses known levels of strength or they gain ridiculously strong new abilities just before they come in handy.) The depth of the Elric brothers' relationship, also reflected in the relationships of other sets of brothers in the series, and their search to get back what once was lost will hook anyone into the series. Without giving it away, the ending is very poignant and somewhat bittersweet, but it leaves one with a sense of hope and wanting to know what happens next. I must caution against the movie, though, which is a substandard continuation of the series.
