EXCELLENT quality photos, but SLOW at taking pictures

This was my first digital camera so far. I decided to buy it because others in my family use fujifilm digital cameras and recommended it to me. I purchased it USED on ebay more than 4 years ago. It is still working, and I am STILL using it! I am very satisfied with the high resolution pictures that it can take.
I use it with four rechargeable AA batteries, so I do not have to buy new batteries.. I just recharge the batteries when it stops working and always keep a spare set on hand that are fully recharged. I do have an AC adapter that you can use with the camera but I prefer not having to be near an outlet every time I want to snap a pic!
I've used the camera extremely often since I bought it and have taken many thousands of pictures with it.. probably more than 8000! I had to buy some extra cards, including a 128 MB card, so that it will store LOTS of photos without needing to change a new card, in fact that's the only card I need now, just one big one that will store lots of pics, then when its filled, I can save them all to hard drive or CD, etc. You can get a lot of pics on a small card IF you set the options for a low quality/low resolution photo, but I like to keep mine at the highest setting/ best quality photo; in which case each photo is around 360 KB. Therefore a small 8 MB card that came with the camera just is not sufficient for storing very many high quality photos.
There are a few issues with the camera that I don't like, but I'm not sure it's with this specific model # or simply because the camera is old and was used so often. (It may have been quicker when new; I'm not positive but it does seem like its a lot slower now than when I first got it)
1) One thing I don't like is that its SLOW. If I am taking a photo of items to sell on ebay, no problem. Once I have the camera turned on and ready, I simply snap the picture and wait 3 seconds before moving or taking a new picture. The photo is excellent and it is worth the wait. However, let's say the cat is doing something funny and I want to get a quick snapshot. Well by the time the camera turns on (about 8 seconds!), I push the button, and 3 seconds later it finally "takes" the picture, the cat is already in the other room! So it is not good for quick spur of the moment shots, but is an excellent camera for getting still pictures of items you want to sell on ebay (or of scenery or family photos, etc.)
2) The other problem I had is that I would occasionally have problems recovering my photos from the SmartMedia card, thinking they were gone forever. (I am not positive if the problem was the card or the camera however.) I solved the problem by purchasing software called Photorescue Data Recovery and whenever I have that problem again, I run the program and it "finds" the missing photos on the card. (However, they are all out of order, which I don't like)
Although there are likely newer and better models of digital cameras out now, I continue to use mine because it keeps on ticking! Because of its durability I hope to upgrade to a newer digital camera by fujifilm in the future when I am able to, and look forward to a "quicker" camera that will take the same high quality photos that I am used to.
