  EXCELLENT quality photos, but SLOW at taking pictures

This was my first digital camera so far. I decided to buy it because others in my family use fujifilm digital cameras and recommended it to me. I purchased it USED on ebay more than 4 years ago. It is still working, and I am STILL using it! I am very satisfied with the high resolution pictures that it can take.

I use it with four rechargeable AA batteries, so I do not have to buy new batteries.. I just recharge the batteries when it stops working and always keep a spare set on hand that are fully recharged. I do have an AC adapter that you can use with the camera but I prefer not having to be near an outlet every time I want to snap a pic!

I've used the camera extremely often since I bought it and have taken many thousands of pictures with it.. probably more than 8000! I had to buy some extra cards, including a 128 MB card, so that it will store LOTS of photos without needing to change a new card, in fact that's the only card I need now, just one big one that will store lots of pics, then when its filled, I can save them all to hard drive or CD, etc. You can get a lot of pics on a small card IF you set the options for a low quality/low resolution photo, but I like to keep mine at the highest setting/ best quality photo; in which case each photo is around 360 KB. Therefore a small 8 MB card that came with the camera just is not sufficient for storing very many high quality photos.

There are a few issues with the camera that I don't like, but I'm not sure it's with this specific model # or simply because the camera is old and was used so often. (It may have been quicker when new; I'm not positive but it does seem like its a lot slower now than when I first got it)

1) One thing I don't like is that its SLOW. If I am taking a photo of items to sell on ebay, no problem. Once I have the camera turned on and ready, I simply snap the picture and wait 3 seconds before moving or taking a new picture. The photo is excellent and it is worth the wait. However, let's say the cat is doing something funny and I want to get a quick snapshot. Well by the time the camera turns on (about 8 seconds!), I push the button, and 3 seconds later it finally "takes" the picture, the cat is already in the other room! So it is not good for quick spur of the moment shots, but is an excellent camera for getting still pictures of items you want to sell on ebay (or of scenery or family photos, etc.)

2) The other problem I had is that I would occasionally have problems recovering my photos from the SmartMedia card, thinking they were gone forever. (I am not positive if the problem was the card or the camera however.) I solved the problem by purchasing software called Photorescue Data Recovery and whenever I have that problem again, I run the program and it "finds" the missing photos on the card. (However, they are all out of order, which I don't like)

Although there are likely newer and better models of digital cameras out now, I continue to use mine because it keeps on ticking! Because of its durability I hope to upgrade to a newer digital camera by fujifilm in the future when I am able to, and look forward to a "quicker" camera that will take the same high quality photos that I am used to.

  Good for beginners, I liked the camera

This was my 2nd Fujifilm camera, and have purchased 2 since.

It was mid range price when I purchased it in 2001. Overall performance was good and pictures were of good quality. Camera works best for e-mail and computer viewing, but I have printed up 8 x 10 on 2.1 Mega pixels Mode. The camera is ok if you are not planning on doing much editing or needing to take quick shots. This is nice camera for the price.

Pros:
* Easy to use
* Menu User Friendly
* Point & Shoot
* Good Picture Quality

Cons:
* Uses 4 AA Batteries, My new cameras take 2 AA and last much longer.
* Use batteries quickly, so always carry extras with you.
* Not durable, do not drop (as I did, and I have read that other people have had the same problem). The battery compartment door is fragile, and only held on by 2 tabs, which I broke. The camera still works if I tape it shut. You can get replacement parts for, but at this time, the used price of a camera is about the same.
* The camera comes with an 8MB smart media card...which is not enough.
* Large in size, will not fit in pocket easily as the newer cameras will.

  Pretty good camera - great for children

I bought this camera for my daughter's 8th birthday. I had read other reviews and of course took the price into mind. This one that I bought came with two memory cards - that also helped with my decision.

My overall experience with the camera is good. It takes good pictures, has a nice zoom - the flash is bright. It's a nice size for my daughter's hands. There's only one major con that I've found with this camera so far - the screen to review your pictures is horrible. You can barely see your pictures. I bought the bunny batterires specifically for electronics and still the screen is bad. It might have an option to change the contrast (didn't come with a manual), but I looked all through the menu on the camera and couldn't find it.

All in all a good camera for a child!

  This is a great Camera and takes very good pictures
Review created: 06/05/07

I bought this camera for my girlfriend I have a fujifilm 4900 which takes good pictures so thats why I got this one and it takes very good pictures. One draw back with this camera is that it takes the smartmedia card which is very expensive. most 128 cards are going for around 45 dollars and up I can get a CF flash card which my Minolta takes 2 gig for 28 dollars.
