I recommend watching the anime first, because it's nothing compared to the books. Don't judge by the descriptions. "Oh...it's a nice story about these magical people who turn into animals.."

NO! This series is so much more than that! The fact that there is magic is pretty much on the back burner. The point of this series is the human emotions of each and every unique character. EVERYONE has inner demons to deal with. EVERYONE is flawed. This series deals with growing up, developing bonds, and dealing with pain and hardships. This is THE BEST book series I have ever read. You are doing yourself an injustice if you don't read these books.

What amazes me the most (other than the genuine emotions of all the characters) is that the characters GROW UP! Literally - they get taller, their faces and wardrobe change... It's so realistic! The characters become more than people in a book... they become realized. Takaya is amazing. She's so talented!
