Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel (1970, Paperback)

For no particular reason other than that it wasn t available at the library when I got the others, I saved the first Frog and Toad book by Arnold Lobel for last. The four really can be read in any order; there s nothing particularly introductory about this volume or final about the last. But Frog and Toad Are Friends is the one that started it all, so it was especially enjoyable to read it after closing the book on the series last week. Unwisely, perhaps, I decided to crack it open last night at 1:30 in the morning, and let me tell you, Arnold Lobel is pretty darn hilarious in those wee hours.

Frog and Toad Are Friends was written in 1970 by Arnold Lobel. It was a Caldecott Honor book in 1971. (The Caldecott Medal named for nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, part of the ALA, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.) Arnold Lobel has brought together a unique pair of animal friends in Frog and Toad are Friends. The well-known "opposites attract" theme is carried on in five short Caldecott Honor winning stories involving the fun-loving Frog and the somewhat crotchety Toad. I purchased this I Can Read book for $5.99, along with several others over time, from the Atlas Editions book club for children (contact information can be found following the review). Back in the day (ahem, it wasn't really that long ago) I remember reading all the stories of Frog and Toad. Author Arnold Lobel does an excellent job of writing easy to understand, short, sentimental stories about 2 best friends. What do I like? I'm very fond of the larger print used and the smaller pictures. (Mr. Lobel also did the pictures in the book.) Although I'm not personally a fan of greens and browns...
