1993's FRIENDS CAN BE LOVERS continues Dionne Warwick's string of smooth but never too slick adult contemporary pop albums for Arista Records. Rather than previous Arista albums that relied on the input of auteur-like producer/writers, the 10 songs here are produced by a variety of folks, including a welcome return by Warwick's best musical partner, Burt Bacharach.
The results are nicely varied, from a Latin-tinged cover of Sting's jazzy ballad "Fragile" to the slinky "The Woman That I Am," and Warwick is in typically excellent voice throughout. Her showboating young cousin Whitney Houston finally appears on a Warwick album, dueting on the single "Love Will Find a Way." FRIENDS CAN BE LOVERS isn't a patch on her classic 1960s work, of course, but it's one of her better later albums.
