Free Lunch Documents Why US is in Trouble
Review created: 12/12/09

Well documented book which provides accounts of how government operates for the benefit of business, not its people. Many abuses shown and practical tips for how we can resolve these problems (term limits and campaign finance reform would help). Ties into my poormansurvival.com site and blog which provides helpful how-to advice and resources.

This is definitely a book that needs to be read. A very eye opening look into big business government subsidies.

A great book by a Pulitzer prize winning author. I read this book about a month ago and I am now giving it as a Christmas gift. This book is a must read for anyone who pays taxes. Johnstonn exposes how corperate greed is used to extort the American taxpayer through laws and loopholes to line the pockets of the "superich". Read this book and you will never look at the government or corperate America the same way again.

I bought the book 4 weeks ago after seeing David Kay Johnson on C-SPAN's Book Tv. Our American journalists, for the most part having forgotten the job of reporting on how the rich are gathering more (often at the direct expense of the rest of us), Mr. Johnson has made up the void. Of particular interest during this election year is his history of the various abuses by health insurance company owners.

This book just gets you upset but maybe more people should be upset about the inner workings of the IRS and big government. It's time we hold our elected offices feet to the fire and level the playing field.

Put down whatever you are reading and get this book and make sure you read it before you vote. Plaudits to David Cay Johnson for writing this important book. Democrat or repubican, independent or green, this book's revelations about the way government operates, specifically how it supports tax breaks for the hyperwealthy at the cost of tax-paying Americans will make you ill. This should be required reading for anyone who cares about the direction of this nation.

Free Lunch by David Cay Johnston

This non-fiction book looks at how the government subsidizes the wealthy. I have always considered myself a middle-class moderate. However, this book was an eye-opener to just how much government gives to big business. I am all for capitalism and the American way, but not the expense of workers who work for a company 20 to 30 years and then get screwed over by a CEO or board, who cut jobs, loot the pension accounts, and walk away with millions, while both workers and investors lose their shirts. That is just not right, no matter where you stand politically.
