Fred Jones' Tools for Teaching-Discipline-Intruction-Motivation by Fredric H. Jones (2000, Paperback)

When I first began teaching, I was given Wong's book. Great book, but a bit impractical. It assumed that the students would immediately and consistently respond to the discipline and management procedures introduced in the book. Jones, however, is practical. He knows kids can be defiant and walks you through how to handle students who are defiant. His discipline system of PAT (Preferred Activity Time) is a great way to allow the students to work towards free choice...that means a system that does not rely on materialistic rewards. He also gives great tips on room arrangement, parent conferences, and many other areas of the profession. His book is an easy read filled with humor. Truly a must-have for beginning and veteran teachers!

His tone seems very condescending towards students. He also says that if you don't have the "teaching gene," don't even bother trying to be a teacher!

I completed my degree in Elementary Education in 2004 and sold my used textbooks. This book was one of them. Over the years I have wished I kept it! Something comes up in class and I would struggle to remember the technique that worked for me when I was in school. I recently repurchased this book and plan to keep it as a reference for all those situations that don't come up everyday.

This is THE BOOK I've been looking for. I'm a substitute teacher, but not a natural classroom manager. I've been struggling with that issue since the beginning. Fred's book takes on classroom management in detail. I've already gotten some good input on what I'm doing wrong and why I suddenly feel like I've got a brain freeze in the middle of a typical high spirited restless group of middle schoolers, and I'm only half way through the book.

Now if I could just flip a switch and begin instantly using the new ideas and behaviors I'm learning about, I'd have it made most of the time even if I am just in the class for a day.

I think the biggest struggle for me and the most important thing so far is to STOP and BREATHE DEEP before trying to do anything. That clears your head and allows you to actually think about how to handle a particular situation instead of going blank and sorta hoping for the best til you're brain kicks back in or the period ends.

For me, teaching is easy, even fun a lot of times. Classroom management has been a major struggle. I feel like reading and using the information in Fred's book is going to give me more time and energy for what I really want and need to be doing in class.

What I like about this book is that it is practical. The author obviously has worked with disadvantaged middle school aged students and has observed the best practices that "master teachers" do to reach and teach these students. He gives specific suggestions to improve teaching practices--even to the way a teacher arranges furniture in the classroom. It is the most practical book I have ever used since I started teaching in the middle school grades. I bought the book for a new middle school teacher I am mentoring--since I did not want to lend him my copy (I often refer to it.)

I bought this book because I'd been to Barnes and Noble and seen it there, but had not wanted to pay the pricey amount it was being sold for. I decided to go to eBay and see if I could find for cheaper there. I did find it, and bid on it and won the item. I haven't had time to read it yet, but when I skimmed through it, it seemed like a very good book for teachers.

Very good book about the insight of how a classroom should be managed. Learnt alot about different ways how to manage a class room. New techniques that I will use in the classroom.

Bought this book as it was required for class. It is a great book and easy to read. It tells more about the way to manage a classroom and what to do when students have behavior issues. This book does a much better job at explaining behaviors and what to do to help teachers gain control of their classroom than any other classroom teaching management book that I have read. This book also gives ideas about how to motivate students. This is a great book for teachers, substitutes and anyone else working with students.

I bought this book on the advice of an instructor. It has great helps for a teacher and was definitely worth buying. It will be a great resource to help with my teaching experience. I highly recommend this book and was happy to find it on eBay for less than the listed retail price.

This is one of two must have books for teachers and substitute teachers. The other is by harry wong entitled first days of school. And a third by Harry Wang is an elearning course entitled classroom management. But this last course costs $150.

As a beginning substitute teacher I gained insight in a very short time to the trials, tribulations and potential successes teachers face from the beginning of the school year. That's where effective teaching starts and where these books and courses shine. However, even as a sub at the end of the school year, I believe I was more effective with the book than had I not bought it. I still have a long way to go, but the road has been shortened and smoothed with the knowledge I've gained in tools for teaching. I intend to buy the other book and ecourse this year to be even more effective.

I purchased this book after having an especially difficult year. Although the book is very interesting and shares some good points, it is very wordy. I think what was being said could be said in fewer words. Still reading it, going through it slowly.
