Movie Description
Despite being cancelled after only 18 episodes, the subsequent cult built up around the FREAKS AND GEEKS television series has seen the show's popularity skyrocket. Internet campaigns and strong word-of-mouth have lead to a burgeoning fanbase which has clamored for the release of the shows. Now finally available, the program is presented here in its entirety. Set in 1980, the show ostensibly follows two groups of high school kids (the "freaks" and the "geeks") as they attempt to navigate the pitfalls of adolescence. Among the colorful characters are the Geeks: Bill, Sam, and Neil, three awkward pre-teen friends undergoing some excruciating, but funny, growing pains. The Freaks are a group who revolve around Sam's older. army-jacket-clad sister, Lindsay, a talented mathematician undergoing various crises of confidence involving life, college, and her on-again, off-again stoner boyfriend. It all adds up to a potent mixture that is moving, funny, and grounded in a reality which accurately captures the often painful experience of being a teenager.

Freaks & Geeks is surprisingly funny & addictive

I never expected to be such a 'Freaks & Geeks' fan - after all, my favorite TV shows are closer to 'Family Guy', The Chappelle Show and Sportscenter... typically either sports or slapstick comedy. But I started watching 'Freaks & Geeks' after reading a newspaper review of it - raving about the show and explaining that it had developed a cult-following (albeit a small one). After just a couple episodes, I think I can rightfully claim membership into that cult.

The premise is a site of high-school aged teenagers growing up in the early 1980s in suburban Detroit. The show depicts different cultures of kids - mostly balancing the 'popular' vs. the 'unpopular'. You quickly become attached to the 'freaks' and 'geeks' - partly because the acting and writing is superb; partly because its easy to sympathize and empathize with the characters... after all, the stories are about maturing, fitting in, and finding yourself. What I enjoy most about the show is that its real - this isn't over the top like Melrose Place or the OC - though they might be fun to watch, this stays within itself.

Though the series aired in 2000 and was Emmy-nominated, it didn't draw enough of an audience to last a second season. It's made its way to DVD though and the series includes 6 discs - most with extras, deleted scenes, etc. Also of note, many of the actors and actresses are beginning to make it big - from starring roles in feature films (Scooby-Doo, the 40 Year Old Virgin) to upcoming sitcoms. In summary - highly recommended!
