Album Notes The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Ian Underwood (vocals, clarinet, keyboards, synthesizer); George Duke (vocals, keyboards); Jeff Simmons (vocals, bass); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded live at Fillmore East, New York, New York on May 11, 1970. FREAKS is part of the BEAT THE BOOTS series of live Zappa recordings given official release to combat a torrent of bootleg albums. Accordingly, the sound is of bootleg quality, leaving a bit to be desired, though the album is certainly listenable. Hardcore fans should be willing to overlook some rough edges for the privilege of experiencing the Mothers in all their freaky glory. FREAKS was recorded during the early-'70s period when Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (the Turtles' Flo and Eddie) shared vocal duties. In this phase, comedic antics took precedence over the highly developed orchestral themes and fusion chops that would later dominate Zappa's music. From an ironic version of the Turtles' hit "Happy Together" to an irreverent imitation of Dr. John, sarcasm is the order of the day at this Fillmore East concert. With Zappa at the helm, of course, there's ample room for guitar workouts, though they're more in the blues-rock vein than the cerebral jazzy style he's best known for. With rocker Aynsley Dunbar on drums, there's a heavier, more straightforward approach to rhythm as well. If you love the live JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM L.A., turn to FREAKS for the rest of the story.
