This is a very upbeat book with fun examples that relates economics and businesses do everyday life examples. The analogies are very simple and easy to understand. It is a good read especially when you want to understand more about the subject of economics or just want a FUN read in general

Looks at the economic side of everyday things, and puts things into statistical perspective. Has some good ideas and points, but likes to toot his own horn too often.

Very informative and fascinating. This is "applied science" at it"s best.
The author uses a keen and observant eye to cut through all the obvious facts and discover the underlying reasons for events and the way people act. Even if you might disagree with some of the author's assertions, you will find yourself looking for your own explanations, below the surface and beyond the obvious.

  An awesome book!
Review created: 10/09/09

Really covers the underlying economics and motivation behind a number of issues (though the different chapters are not really connected.)

Very well written and presented in English rather than a statistical format.

There are a few controversial issues, but it is particularly hard to argue with the conclusions the authors draw after the evidence is presented.

I totally recommend this book for pretty much anyone, though I think people on the extreme side of the political spectrum (both right and left) may take offense to some of the content (though this is definitely NOT the authors' intent.)

It was a text book, it was fine, thank you.I do not have 100 characters to ad, it was required text not available in the bookstore, this was easiest. The papges were maked with horribale green ink which makes the text a little difficult to read but it is only on a few pages.

not bad at all, but could be better

So far I enjoyed reading this book. Topics are interested and taken from daily life observations. The text is easy to read, not technical at all. However, while I was reading it, I kept catching myself thinking that delivery could be better. In some parts text is not coherent. They start with one example, then move to another, and then back to the old example. Instead of jumping back and forward I would prefer just moving forward. Overall, I would advice you to get this book especially if you are curious about economics but have trouble connecting it to real life situations.

  An insightful book
Review created: 11/09/08

Stephen Dubner's freakonomics as the name suggests is somewhat "freaky" in terms of conventional wisdom. Its indeed a bold attempt to question our usual way of looking at social events. For example, the fall of Ku Klax Klan due to the loss of their secrecy and how its is similar to the information hoarding of real estate agents is quite interesting. The authors know how to draw a causal relation between two seemingly unrelated incident like the legalisation of abortion in USA and the drop in crime rate in the mid nineties. Moreover the authors have taken utmost care to justify their reasoning with available data unlike the average journalist or media man. Overall its a very nice and exciting read.

I bought this book for an Urban Studies course I was taking. I know the legitimacy of this book as fact is somewhat disputed. I did, however, find the book entertaining as well as thought provoking. The concepts and ideas are interesting to analyze and think about regardless of whether or not they are true.

  This downloadable book is bad.
Review created: 03/07/08
by:

This is a purchase of a download, and there is no unexpected bad event for the purchase or download. But the downloaded book is certainly a disappointment. Any page that has data in a table form is gabbled, and therefore the important data is unreadable. I have to go to the library to get a paper copy to see what is going on. For example, on the peper book's p.42, there is a very simple table

7-7 Wrestler's 7-7 Wrestler's
Predicted Win ... Actual Win ...
----------------------------------
47.2 73.4

The downloaded version placed the character everywhich way and that simple information is completely unreadable.

I have totally wasted my money on this downloadable book.

  Very Entertaining Read
Review created: 02/13/08

It's a fast page turner for sure. Levitt does an oustanding job explaining the difference between what many consider the causes of social problems versus simple reflections of them. A lot of people could do us all a favor and read this book before the next time the open their mouths.

I know I am in the minority, but after a few chapters you get the point. You can read the website also and get other scenarios. It did not hold my attention long enough to finish. The premise is great and two bright minds are able to explain to the masses how statistics reveal the truth about many situations.

The item itself was fine but the amount of time it took to receive it was longer than I was lead to believe it would be - it didn't arrive in time for Christmas.
