A wonderful story that teaches great lessons--

Rodman Philbrick is definitely one of the best authors out there for adolescents today. In this book, Freak the Mighty, he chronicles the relationship between two unlikely boys--Max, a giant slow-witted boy and Freak, a small boy with leg braces.
Between the two of them, they conquer life's problems--family troubles, bullies, and the struggle to fit in. Included in the back of the book is Freak's dictionary--his take on a few ideas and meanings of words.
The book is funny and heartbreaking at the same time, and it is one that kids will never forget. A good book for fifth grade and up, it is appropriate for many readers and is eagerly devoured by even those who struggle with reading. This book is also a great read-aloud; I have read it aloud to kids and they've really enjoyed it.
