This book was recommended to me because I am about to start my first year teaching in an inner-city public school. The book was very helpful and interesting. I think that the information in the book will help me have a better grasp of where my students come from and how they behave the way that they do. This book is not just for teachers, but anyone who works with the public or just wants to expand their understanding of people. I highly recommend it.

This book is a MUST READ for teachers! It will change the way you teach and aid in communicating with parents. The statistics offered are amazing. The suggestions for how to overcome the challenges of teaching children living in poverty are VERY helpful.

I personally have not read the book. I bought it for a gift to give to my brother-in-law who quit his high paying corporate job to become a teacher in the Chicago school system. He absolutely loves the book! I got the idea when my sons principal bought the book for all of his staff to read and discuss at the after school teacher meetings. Fabulous idea, I think! I look forward to reading the book when my brother-in-law finishes it.

This book contains a lot of interesting information especially if you've never thought about the poverty affect on schooling. Some of the info seems like common sense though.

This book was in good shape, no highlighting in which I LOVE! It looked as though only one other person used it and they took good care of their book. The book came fast and I am overall happy with this purchase.

  "A Framework for Understanding Poverty"

I attended an inservice given by a consultant on the study of Dr. Ruby Payne and decided to purchase the book, "a framework for unbderstanding poverty." I had read and currently using this research in my dissertation. I received a module which was completely a hands on for fostering comprehension. This book provides examples and reality checks for every key component established through Dr. Payne's research.

  Educational and informative
Review created: 11/02/08

For the last 5 years I have mentored 3 teen sisters whose mother is 3rd generation "Chicago" welfare and had moved to our community. This book while written for educators provided me with many "aha" moments when a high school guidance counselor friend lent me a copy. Many of Ms. Payne's observations were dead on and I have been able to approach the girls issues with a more educated approach. The chapters that dealt with language were especially helpful. A side note; These girls are white. My daughter-in-law who is a school teacher in a small rural town has also found the book helpful in dealing with her schools students and parents. I would recommend this book to anyone who has the opportunity to work with people in poverty. It opened my mind to the challanges they experience and must overcome to break the cycle of poverty. I have 2 copies of this book and recommend it often to people I know who do volunteer work in inner city groups and missions.

This book is a must have for teachers, social workers, mentors, or anyone wanting to understand the mindset of people in various economical, and social classes. It gives great insight as to the goals, standards and importance placed on the aspects of life in upper, middle and lower class families. Well worth the cost!!
