Foyle's War - Set 1 (DVD, 2003, 4-Disc Set)

We first saw this series on Masterpiece Theatre a few years ago and have been waiting for it to return, either as reruns or a new season. We decided we just could not wait any longer.

An excellent example of understated acting, drama, and intrigue. Each episode holds your attention until the very end. All this is accomplished with practically no gun shots, profanity, and car chases. Never see blood, guts, or nudity. This series is a plus for children because they can actually learn some WWII history from the British perspective. We turn on the closed captioning to help us with the British accent.

The main character is chief detective superintendent Christopher Foyle. He is a person of few words, but his facial expressions and body language speak volumes. There is great interaction between Foyle and his driver, and Foyle and his subordinate.

I absolutely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mysteries.

I saw this series by mistake one night and was hooked. It was so well done that I went out and bought the DVD's the next day. They have extras and shows how the first episode was done a year before the rest and how the series came to be. Good TV, very well done.

Mysteries set in wartime England. Whether you like history or mysteries this will interest you. Beautifully acted. British film making at it's best. Well worth owning. I bought them for a friend but might end up keeping them for myself.

The reason I bought this my husband and I really enjoy British series and this way is cheaper that any other source. We are retired and on limited Income so have to watch our 'pennies' so to speak. I recommend E-Bay to all our friends,its a great way to shop.

Wonderfully done in all aspects. I missed parts of the series on PBS and wanted to enjoy the full length version at my leisure.

I bought these because I read online that they were good. That is an enormous understatement! The Foyles' War series is the very best of their kind available.
they are marvelous murder mysteries and also excellent historical fiction. Michael Kitchen is my favorite detective of all time, and I am also a Hercule Poirot fan. I only wish there were more than 16 episodes available!

This starts the series of Insp. Foyle during WW2 (the big one !)plus we get to meet Sam ( Honeysuckle Weeks )that became a big part of the series. Even with those ugly Brit uniforms she looks good !
The plots are inteligent and the filming is top notch & finding WW2 items must be difficult.
Worth Buying in my opinion.

Foyle's War is in the fine British mystery tradition. Excellent acting; interesting characters and period situations (WWII).
