A very handy reference for the beginning collector!
Review created: 05/28/08

This is a title that I had been wanting to add to my library for some time, and was really pleased to finally find it. (I gather from the length of time that it took to do so that this is either a very popular title, a short printing, or both.)
Many guides overwhelm you with their very size, and the amount of technical information they contain. (Most beginning collectors just want to be better able to identify their finds!) This one is only 8.25" X 5.25" with 150 pages (pocket sized!), and is concise and to the point. It has a short Introduction, then it gets right to the good stuff: black-and-white photos of every tooth described/named; location in which the photographed teeth were found; other names (common and scientific) for that species; the geologic time period in which the teeth can be found; average tooth size; rarity; a short description of the physiology of the teeth ; similar teeth; and special notes on the species/teeth... all on a single page.
There are several Note pages in the back that can be used when you are out in the field.
The book is also Indexed, which is very handy to have.
The author has included a 2-page Suggested Reading list that contains many great titles.
The only negative comment I can think of that one might make about this book is that the photos are not in color, not taken from enough different angles, or there are too few close-ups.
However, if the author had chosen to do those things, then we would likely be looking at a volume, not a field guide... and, instead of a guide priced in reach of all collectors at only $20, it would have to be priced so much higher that it would be out of reach of some.
I believe it is an extremely well-done guide for the beginning to intermediate shark's tooth hunter!
