Movie Description The incomparable Rip Torn stars as rich music producer Alan James in Ira Sachs's FORTY SHADES OF BLUE. Shacked up in Memphis with his impossibly beautiful Russian girlfriend, Laura (Dina Korzun), James is a scoundrel who seduces women and barks orders at the hapless lackeys who work for him. But when Michael, his son from a previous marriage (Darren E. Burrows), returns to Memphis, James's life is turned upside down, especially when Michael makes amorous advances towards Laura. An excellent cast makes Sachs's film compelling viewing, with Torn perfectly cast as a former legend who can't leave the wild days behind despite the fact that the ravages of age are catching up with him.

Editorial Reviews "The sense of alienation is evoked perfectly by production designer Teresa Mastropierro....Sachs keeps the tone tentative, the camera and cutting fluid, and the motives tantalizingly oblique." Sight and Sound - Ryan Gilbey (07/01/2006)
4 stars out of 5 -- "[B]oth Torn and Korzun give deeply-felt performances..." Total Film - Kevin Harley (01/01/2007)
