60's GARAGE / PSYCH Rock
Review created: 11/15/08(updated 11/16/08)

The Chocolate Watchband was a very good 60's Garage band from California. They have a rather strange and disjointed history; which is extremely hard to follow. (Look them up on the net to learn more).
One thing which should be mentioned, though, is that producer Ed Cobb sometimes replaced the Watchband's vocals with those of another singer(?!) A strange decision considering that the group's lead singer at the time, David Aguilar, was quite good, sounding a great deal like Mick Jagger (maybe that was the problem, in Cobb's mind ?), and possessing a fair amount of charisma.
In fact Cobb, who was also the producer for The Standells; although being instrumental in helping create the band's often fascinating recordings; got carried away to the extent of hiring studio musicians to play on whole sides of the Watchband's LPs.
Apparently this CD attempts to present the band as they really sounded, without outside singers and musicians, and with Aguilar's punky vocals intact. A worthy goal, and "44" is a solid Garage/Psych CD.
I plan to acquire everything by the Chocolate Watchband which is available.
Recommended.
