Obviously an exhaustive research about the Great Depression from the view of the movers and the shakers of the times. Written almost like a text book, it has an enormous amount of information following all the key players of the day. Historically, it parallels the current economic situation in America and voters need to be careful not to elect another canidate that sounds a lot like FDR this election. Hold on tight, America! Seems to me like we are in for a repeat of history.
The vocabulary in this book is tough even for devout readers but keep the dictionary handy and you will learn a lot!

A very timely recap of the folly of FDR's policies and the damage done to the nation. Unfortunately, it appears we will have to life through it again. I hope that everyone with a love for this country, will read this book (and others like it) and will vote accordingly to stop this downward slide to socialism and the resulting loss of freedoms and always comes with it.

This is a fasinating book by a well known current economist that has no political agenda other than her quest for the true facts of the era. Terrific book if you want the completely unbiased version of the political climate of the country at that time as well as the errors that our leadership made - well intentioned though they may have been.

  A MUST READ -- OBAMA
Review created: 11/05/08

I saw Ms. Shlaes on the 'Daily Show' and was very impressed as she totally dominated the host, Jon, and over whelmed him with facts laced with an interpative overview of the people and situation. I bought the book immediately.
This book was written with the forsight of the impending crisis and is a "must read" for every person that is in the Obama camp, especially those that will be in his administration. Ms. Shlaes is very careful to link the 'players' to their contemparies and gives the reader the background required to understand their motives and positions.
Although only half way through the book Shlaes skillfuly packs each sentence in a colorful manner that condenses the volumes of information relavent to the facts that usually would be in several volumes. The intuition of heading up each chapter with the DJI rating and occasionaly within, realitive to important events will captivate the market watcher within, but she goes beyond to make sense as to the relavent conditions as to the class workings of the economy and the impacts that where being felt.

I highly recommend this book and at prices like these it is as if it is being released as an ecomonic handout lesson that everyone (so able and inclined) should take advantage of. The book is a 'hard read' compariable to a third year college textbook (worth $80), but so informative it is still a MUST recommend.

  Wonderful History Lesson

In this book readers will see history in a perspective not read about anywhere. From my middle school years through my college years I have not read anything like what this book has to offer. The most sobering thought about this book is when I did some of the research to see if Ms. Shales was telling half-truths or just flat out lying the fact remains that all she tells me is true and quite shocking. The Forgotten Man is a masterpiece that will make you mad, frustrated, and proud. K

It's scary to see government make the same mistakes over and over. The misconceptions and poor judgements that were made after the Big Recession to create the Big Depression are being repeated today. FDR's demonization of utilitiy companies is happening again against the oil companies. Abuse of power and egomaniacs never seem to go out of style. The future is revealed thru our history, read this and be forewarned.

Well written description of events leading into the Great Depression and how misguided ideas and actions by Hoover caused a recession to grow into a depression. It then describes how errors and arrogance of FDR created conditions which kept the nation in the chains of the depression for a decade by preventing the natural forces that could have remedied the situation.

  The Forgotten Man

I bought it to learn the facts and details of that era. I wanted to judge for myself all the things that I never heard from in school text books, taught in college or others on their own. Also the seniors of this time that lived through it don't share much. A few questions to ask yourself,- why did the stock market crash, why did the depression happen, why did the depression last so long, and for those that seek truth and facts, what were the statistics of those days to compare with today?? Most of this, when you love truth, care for your family, your life and country should make you curious. Excellent book to save time and shorten a long search.

I bought the book on the recomendation of GLEN BECK and what happened during the depression of the 1930's. The book goes into very deep details about the cause and recovery of the depression. The book was heavy reading in parts. Over all I would suggest the book.

  Rewrite of history.

This is a lopsided rewriting of history. It has a conservative slant --trickle down run wild. FDR and his programs are minimized. She missed the boat. FDR was a relief in that he tried many things--some good--some not so good. Hoover tried nothing ,he caused the bonus marchers to be chased away from Washington, and lost the election. If FDR was so bad ,why was he reelected so many times? Sorry Amity, stick to the financial channel, obviously pundits like her know what will happen to the economy today. I betcha.
