Synopsis
In this family epic by the bestselling author Kate Morton, an orphan named Nell embarks on a lifelong search for her true ancestry, but the puzzle of her origin is only solved by her granddaughter, years after Nell is dead and gone. Abandoned on a ship bound for Australia in 1913, a young British girl with no name and no identification, carrying nothing but a book of fairy tales, is taken in and raised by the dockmaster and his wife. "Nell," as they call her, does not learn the truth about her heritage until she is 21 years old. She eventually returns to England in search of her real family. As a starting point, Nell seeks the author of the mysterious book of fairy tales, and soon she begins to unravel the secrets of the Mountrachet family, a fallen clan with a history of deceit and possible incest. Nell dies before she ever learns the truth of her identity, but her doting granddaughter Cassandra renews the search and solves the age-old mystery of her grandma's birth. Morton's wondrous prose evokes the past and present with equal urgency, and she deftly weaves the symbolic fairy tales into the narrative as tantalizing clues to the shocking final revelation.
