  50th anniversary two-disc special edition

This is my take on the 2006 DVD 20th anniversary two-disc special edition set.

This set is for people who have loved this movie or the whole 1950s scifi movie genre. If you don't enjoy these things, then you were possibly born too late. :)

An expository viewing sequence might go like this:

1. DISC 2 special feature documentary WATCH THE SKIES
This is narrated by Spielberg, Lucas and other notables. It includes scenes from vintage movies of those times and discussions of major themes: nuclear age fears, flying saucer frenzy, giantized animals (and one humanform plant from THE THING), space girl fantasies, wicked scientists and good soldiers, wicked soldiers and good scientists, missions of peace, missions of destruction, lots of other stuff. I must protest common terminology (and Spielberg at one point): beings from other worlds arriving on Earth without passports and visas are rightly called "aliens"; when humans arrive similarly on other worlds, it is they who are the aliens. This was an extant documentary film, but I wish it had included the breathtaking art/animation scenes of the destruction of the Metalunan capital city from THIS ISLAND EARTH. If they had done so, they could have juxtaposed it nicely with the destruction of L.A. in WAR OF THE WORLDS. Both of these movies were out in 1954 {correction: Forgive my sloppiness! WOTW is given as 1953, TIE as 1955, on imdb.com}. Even so, I think this film is an excellent survey of the subject.

2. DISC 2 special feature documentary AMAZING!
This tells of the making of FORBIDDEN PLANET. Cast members and artists explain the designs in some detail. In particular: Robbie the robot, planetscape for planet Altair 4, the mindboggling Krell machine, influences on the Star Trek series, the wonderful electronic filmscore by the Barrons. I thought it interesting how the crew thwarted inevitable budget cuts by completing large sets preemptorily.

3. DISC 2 special feature documentary ROBBIE THE ROBOT.
Robbie is every kid's favorite player in FORBIDDEN PLANET (no contest). This film is an extension of the AMAZING! documentary to talk about Robbie in particular. Robbie looks great and the voice of Robbie adds a wonderful touch of Wodehouse's Jeeves to the character.

4. DISC 1 Restored full-length feature film FORBIDDEN PLANET in CinemaScope aspect.
There is too much to say about this movie. Let me just use phrases: Robbie, the SpaceCruiser C-57D, Leslie Nielsen as a dashing and straight-dramatic ship commander, Beautiful/wonderful Anne Francis and her great outfits, the ominous theme of interior monstrosity. "We are all part monster".
Check out imdb.com for more details.

5. DISC 2 Feature Film THE INVISIBLE BOY black&white.
This is Robbie the robot's second film. I think there are some interesting parallels between the self-centered super-computer villain of this movie and the out-of-control Krell machine of FORBIDDEN PLANET.

6. DISC 1 TV episode of THE THIN MAN.
Robbie appears as guest here and plays the suspect in a case of murder. Nick Charles proves Robbie innocent. Robbie finally gets to carry a woman by carrying Nora Charles. The inevitable Asta is there.

The usual special trailers, lost scenes, test scenes and promos are included.

A Classic Sci Fi Movie for everyone~
PLOT: SPACE CRUISER FULL OF MEN CAPTAIN (YOUNG AND HANDSOME) YES HE WAS (Leslie Neilson)
arrive at the LAST HOME OF DR. MORBIUS (Walter Pigeon) and his lovely daughter (Anne Francis). The fun begins when the Captain and his crew are "warned off" the planet but push ahead any way~ gee like sailors on leave they all fall over themselves trying to get the "attention" of the lovely ULTARA~ Anne Francis who is at the very least a total innocent of men~having only been around her protective father~ ADD Robbie the Robot who can make just about anything the crew or Morbius OR Ultara wants. ~ some great fun is watching the captain have his advances brushed off by the lovely Ultara ADD the mysterious and invisible "killer" stalking the crew at night. cleverly we only can spot the footprints of the monster who we can tell is one UGLY big monster by his foot print alone~ but who or WHAT ?warned the crew to stay away from the planet and what is the purpose of killing them off one by one and why is the killer leaving Morbius and his daughter alone? GREAT thriller plot and ending!~
very good special effects for this movie add the erie music and this is a classic sci fi fun you will watch more than once~

I GIVE IT A SOLID 9 OUT OF 10 FOR MYSTERY THRILLS AND FUN~

  Forbidden Star Trek

A fantastic sci-fi version of Shakespeare's The Tempest and also the unmistakable source for much of the technology and ideology of Star Trek of the 1960's. A bit hokey with the ship's cook and his enterprising G.I. in space makes booze exploits, Leslie Nielsen is the prototypical Captain Kirk, though his crew is the epitome of 1950's Eisnehower Whiteness...this is where Star Trek reflects Kennedy and Johnson with its diverse ethnic cast. Plus, you've got to love Robbie crusin' at high speed in his futuristic cadillac with fins front and back!

This is a great 1950s science fiction movie that is a classic in this genre. The one I bought was transferred to DVD very competently and is a pleasure to view. Price was reasonable, likewise shipping.

Forbidden Planet is a classic 50's Sci-Fi with a cool twist. It was well written, well directed and supurbely cast. The story makes you think and the plot makes sence. For the era, the special effects were nothing short of magic.
I collect movies for a variety of reasons. I have some films that are dumb. I have some that are ground breaking, and others that are classics. I like those that challenge my perseptions the best. As old as it is, FORBIDDEN PLANET is still an entertaining, thought provoking film that stands the test of time. Don't confuse this with most of the sci-fi's of the era.
I have seen this film on TV every so often for years and finally got tired of waiting for it to come on.

This is a Great Movie. I think it tells a great story which is lacking in many movies made today. I think the graphic are great as well with the understanding of when they were made, and not comparing them with modern graphics. I highly recommend this Movie.

I admit this movie came out before I was born, but man o man what a cool oldies flick! Robbie the robot! COOOoooOOOOOooolllllll. If your a bonofied sci fi nutter, this is a must have for your collection. Even the colorised version is good. Grab the penny candy and hot dogs "Daddy O" and lets grove and shimmy to a fav old movie! (wonder if i said that right??)
Kiddie friendly even with a not so mature adult. (your going back to your own youth with this flick so adultie acting is gonna be out for you!)

The movie returns me to Saturday afternoon on the couch emensely enjoying scifi
at it's greatest. Movies such as this one when broadcast were cherished in those days 'cause you couldn't rent one if you wanted to. My own copy of Forbidden Plannet is a fine addition to my small DVD library.

This movie is a great classic sci fi. The documentary and commentary included with the movie are terrific. I looked for the movie in my area and could never find it or I had to pay a ridiculous price for a 40 year old movie. Ebay makes these kinds of items available and I love it.

Amazing, wonderful sci-fi for 1956. Still one of the greatest sci. fi. flicks ever made. Hope they don't ruin it in a remake like they did with Planet of the Apes and Time Machine. Beautifully restored. Unique adaptation of The Tempest (I love Shakespeare). Saw it then I was 12 and have love it ever since. Extra disk is good for the interviews with Spielberg and others and the other clips with Robbie were fun, except for the kid's movie which was a yawner.

  Setting the Standard
Review created: 09/18/09

This, in my opinion, was the first movie that used Science Fiction as a way to convey a rather sophisticated theme of intelligence and morality. There was also features such as intelligent robotics, (Robbie the robot) etc. that appealed to the "younger generation". The graphics now seem basic but they were "cutting edge" in that period. Excellent!

''Forbidden Planet'' Thrills after Fifty-plus Years
Review created: 08/12/09
by:

The first time I saw Forbidden Planet, I was eight years old. It is likely I began to develop a love for science fiction as a result of its incredible-for-the-era special effects. The next time I encountered the film was as a fifteen-year-old geeky member of an audio-visual team who presented it to a packed audience at our local church's film fest. (Our state-of-the-art 16mm projector was equipped with a lens that allowed us to throw a Cinemascope image on the screen.) But I digress. Until the 2006 fifty-year edition DVD arrived in our mailbox a couple of weeks ago, 1963 was the last time I saw Planet. Fifty-three years after its initial release, it is still the cinematic masterpiece it always was --- a true classic.

The Forbidden Planet, greatest of scifi classics!
Review created: 07/10/09

This film had a huge inspiration on "Star Trek", it's music was ground breaking and it had an intelligent script, not just a typical "creature feature" or the like, in fact, it's story becomes more and more apropos as our technology increases, in fact!

This version adds some deleted or unfinished scenes, giving bits of trivia and insight into the production.
Such as how a long unwieldy "scientific-gobbledygook" name for the ship's drive, got shortened to the much easier "hyper drive" which became a classic staple of scifi ever after.

Anne Francis was a stunningly beautiful woman, and along with the gorgeous backdrops, the visuals are great and nice to see them restored.

Most folk will probably know the plot, a wonderful adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest", where a scientist and his daughter, with Robbie the robot live in isolation, all other members of their colony ship having being killed in mysterious cirumstances decades ago, and a patrol ship comes to investigate...

You'd be hard put to improve the under-pinnings today, though obviously, we find much of it anachronistic: for example, a ship full of only MEN cooped up together for a year?! lol. The story, art, music and characters are timeless though.

Are we becoming the Krell? ;)

Definately a MUST have for any lover of classic scifi and art.

Mint condition example of cassic sci/fi DVD &extras!!!
Review created: 03/20/09

--- WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE???... This 50th anniversary special DVD of a stunningly forward-looking film (for 1954!!) has extra scenes and dialogue, period movie trailers (EVER so POPULAR 'back in the day' in the old 'movie houses' we all used to haunt on Saturdays), and an entire extra MOVIE, 'THE INVISIBLE BOY', featuring the feature film's featured star, 'Robbie the Robot'...
--- Why did I BUY IT???... Oh Pa-LEEEEZE!!! I first watched this movie as a much fascinated boy with my MOM in about 1964... SHE recommended the film to me, in particular making mention of 'Robbie' and how 'realistic he seemed'...
--- So you see, this film is part of my heritage... I must have seen it eighty times by now and the thrill is still there... 'FORBIDDEN PLANET', when compared to contemporary sci/fi films of the day, has absolutely no equal... To own one is second nature to me... The richness of the sound, the video quality and the production enhancements of this anniversary issue are all the more reason to purchase this... Leslie Nielsen's Commander Adams is a real 'look-ahead' to such characters as Captains James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard & Benjamin Sisko of 'STAR TREK'; no-nonsense leaders who take problems 'by the throat', plus a supporting cast of able officers who equally handle their responsibilities with dash & flair... Plus, I've truly yet to see another film SINCE tackle the ever-mysterious, cloudy, shadowy world of the human subconscious as does THIS FILM... (Perhaps 'SILENCE OF THE LAMBS')
--- I'm a born-again Christian, and WE call this part of ourselves 'the SIN NATURE'... There is a lesson to be learned in the merciless, dark, destructive & malevolent nature of 'the ID Monster' as depicted in the movie... HOW LOW will WE STOOP if we are reduced to our basest, lowest motivations and darkest intents; left to run amok, and then given LIMITLESS POWER to express this perversity at the expense of all else??...One shudders at the THOUGHT...
---You want to know WHY I bought the film??? Because it's GREAT ENTERTAINMENT; something today's idiotic, over budgeted maledictions from Hollywood cannot match, with ALL their computer-generated CRAP... Also, early in the film Doctor Ostrow (Warren Stevens) makes the comment observing the approach to the mysterious planet Altair IV: "The LORD sure makes some BEAUTIFUL worlds..." How did THAT escape the censors???... Perhaps in the film's final sequence Leslie Nielsen sums it up best as he embraces the beautiful Altaira Morbius (Anne Francis) on the C-57D's bridge as the ship begins the long trip home...
"After all, Alta, such things as this remind us that WE ARE NOT GOD..."
--- There it is; fascination, fantasia, forward-vision, FUN... And YES, EVEN a little 'FAITH'... As I said at the beginning of this; WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE???

The movie quality is great. In my opinion, young people discovering this film for the first time will find that the story line, acting and special effects stand up very well in this day and age.

The second CD with outtakes, cut scenes and additional short films which include "Robby" the robot, are interesting, fun, and educational by offering the viewer a perspective on the workings of the filmmaking industry of the 50's.

I personally recommended this highly affordable dvd set to lovers of science fiction.

I would have loved to hear an audio commentary by Leslie Neilson or Anne Francis or even both. However it seems this was not meant to be. This film is a classic and it cannot be said enough. I will always treasure it and try to pass on my love of this film to others.
